You know, I so consistently find Ed Yourdon's commentary so balanced and reasonable that when these yokels attack him I can't help but think that the "religious" argument really goes the other way. That is, the naysayers really worship The System and any hint that The System might be in jeopardy, no matter how well defended or how much evidence, must be ridiculed and quashed. I can't come up with any other explanation.

Good. Its about time more people start challenging nonsense like that put out by Yourdon. Horsefeathers.

-- Prof (comp@addy.mac), May 25, 1999.

cpr is right

Yourdon's written statement was better than the little chat he had today. That was dumb.

This just in from Dallas, a World Class City:

Fox4 News here in Dallas/Fort Worth just announced that the city of Dallas has said that 'most' of its systems are already Y2K compliant.

But the water pumps and sewage treatment systems will not be compliant until DECEMBER 1999.

Will CPR's toilet back up? That would be some small justice.

If it weren't for Ed Yourdon, Gary North, and all the others that began ringing the bells on this Y2K mess, no one even at this late date would have ever heard a word about any pending problem. No, I don't think Messers Yourdon/North, etc., walk on water, but they're keeping all the rest of us from drowning in a sea of secrecy which is the name of the game for our government. Politics has nothing to do with this. CNN isn't covering the "contingency" planning being done in case nothing happens. Since nothing is going to happen why all the underground planning? I for one can't thank Mr. Yourdon and all the others enough for their stand and the work they've done. Personally I hope Mr. Yourdon has made a fortune on his books and speaking engagements. All of that is his business...not mine. I am gratefull for what he and the others have done.

Grateful that he and his MLM Bull have keep the FUD going for so long? what kind of idiot are you?

Just one little itty bitty question for "cpr."

Why don't you just post over here, with the same "handle" you use over there?

Instead of adding all the NOT so cute comments yourself?

Character assassination in lieu of a reasoned response.

Seeking the facts, the truth? Be careful, you might already be an extremist and a propagandist.

Diane

What handle does this cpr use over here? I thought I had read him before. I mostly just lurk around the edges. Please let me know. Thanks Laura

Forget about it. Those guys will argue that grass isn't green because it eventually goes to seed. Let's just try to keep them in check on this forum, and not worry about their home base. <:)=

I have a question for all the Pollyanna's on all these forums. If you believe what you spout off about why would you waste all your time on this subject. If I thought that Y2K was only going to be a Bump In The Road I would not be reading articles or visiting these various forums.

Joe Stout

-- Joe Stout (joewstout@iswt.com), May 25, 1999.

I rather doubt that anybody from the two forums referenced above has been invited to give expert testimony before the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives, the President's Conversion Council, the CIA, the NIC, the World Bank, the UN, the BIS, or any other high-level body seriously investigating the Y2K problem. I wonder why, since the people on those forums seem to know everything.

-- Don Florence (dflorence@zianet.com), May 25, 1999.

Don:

I think you make a good point!

Its amazing how dumb and cruel peple can be. Ed Yourdon, Ed Yardeni, Michael Hyatt, Gary North, and all could make a lot more money elsewhere and with a lot less hassle. I would defend them even more but they are all great and tough men (and women)who can take care of themselves. May God Bless them!

-- Jon Johnson (narnia4@usa.net), May 25, 1999.

Folks,

we have to remember that people like the y2k kiddies,'doc' paulie, and the like are very frightened and alienated individuals. If you spend any time observing them, you'll notice immediately that, despite their claims to the contrary, they have no real sense of belonging to a community, and their entire underlying motivation is based on maintaining their own comfort level.

Because of this lack of proper socialization on their part, our actions and attitudes are absolutely incomprehensible to them.

Because they cannot imagine self-sacrificial cooperative efforts based on theological and philosophical motivations, they are reduced to excuses based on science fiction (i.e. their fantasies about "memes").

Because they are so wounded that actual trust is impossible for them, they can only lash out angrily, and in an uncoordinated fashion...they can't even trust each other - have you noticed that?

Because any change from the status quo is interpretted by them as being something which will inevitably increase their pain, they simply clench their eyes closed, put their fingers in their ears, and hum loudly as our societal train rapidly approaches the rickety bridge of the y2k rollover.

Because they are so immature, mature reactions frighten them, and consistently adult behavior is beyond their capacity.

In other words, they really don't deserve our hate, so much as our pity...and our prayers.

I just watched the video of today's Senate testimony, which you can get to with this link:

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000s3Y

Senator Bennett did mention those who are trying to profit off Y2K for their own gain, and then specifically mentioned that he was not talking about Ed Yourdon.

-- Kevin (mixesmusic@worldnet.att.net), May 26, 1999.

Why did Bennett say that? Yourdon has two y2k books for sale. for profit. He is profiting from y2k. He has MLM scams set up. Bennett needs to be better informed I see.

-- Liars (kissmy@ssy2k.freaks), May 26, 1999.

Arlin,

I basically agree with what you say. There is a deep psychological factor working within the Polly group. We all started on our Y2k information journey in the same way. Somewhere, something was said or written about it that caught our attention. We then started looking into it, collecting information, trying to come to an intellegent decision. For us, on this forum, the overwhelming weight of opinion and evidence caused us to look at the serious problems and repercussions that seem likely. For the Polly group, a point was reached where they would go no further into the "evidence". They won't be called in to testify for the government or any other large legitimate investigative group. They will be ignored by all the serious professional remediation groups. They have a problem. They want so desperately for this not to be a real crisis, yet they can not produce the evidence of turnaround needed with only 7 months to go. Some of their evidence, like the FAA, or HCFA statements are so lame that it defies logic. Perhaps *only* a psychological explanation can approach their denial position.

David Palm said it for me:

"You know, I so consistently find Ed Yourdon's commentary so balanced and reasonable that when these yokels attack him I can't help but think that the "religious" argument really goes the other way. That is, the naysayers really worship The System and any hint that The System might be in jeopardy, no matter how well defended or how much evidence, must be ridiculed and quashed. I skimmed through this thread pretty fast, just to confirm my suspicions I wasn't missing much. I hope my GI friends really have the extra time and mental space to waste on "answering" people who David described so exactly.

(Possible better uses of time -- I'm coaching myself here, too -- (1) finish my preps, (2) community/family awareness (HA!), (3) having a life -- it's a beautiful spring day outside.)

Sorry for getting preachy -- I'm learning to just skim the forum by reading the thread originator's name, and I hate to miss good remarks that you post on other threads, but that's the way it goes, eh?

"On May 25, 1999, Ed Yourdon testified before the U.S. Senate. His testimony, now on the public record, stands as one of the most well-constructed presentations of what we call "Y2K sanity." It blasts naysayers, the media, Alan Greenspan, and the federal government. Yet he manages to make it sound polite. Read it yourself:"
