Falwell Moderates His Position, Withdraws Video

Since my series of messages on Y2K in August, 1998, I've been pleased with the substantial progress that has been made in both the government and private sector in dealing with this matter. While I expect Y2K to be annoying and somewhat disruptive, I do not expect it to be as serious as some are projecting, or as I first feared possible.

While I still believe that God could use the Y2K crisis to get the spiritual attention of people everywhere, as every large and small natural disaster always does, Y2K will certainly show us all that He is still in control of the universe and uses every human dilemma for his purposes.

Dr. Falwell Updates Y2K Stance

May 21, 1999

Christian Computing Magazine-Steve Hewitt, Editor-in-Chief of Christian Computing Magazine, has been leading Y2K seminars across the nation. Part of his message, since mid-January, has included that he had been in touch with Dr. Jerry Falwell, and Dr. Falwell had informed Rev. Hewitt that he had changed his opinions on the results of Y2K.

Before mid-January, Dr. Falwell had preached a three part series on Y2K. He made a special Y2K video available, that contained the information given during this special series. Dr. Falwell had reported to Rev. Hewitt, in January, that he had come to the conclusion that the results of Y2K would not be nearly as bad as first speculated. From that point, as Steve Hewitt took the Y2K message to hundreds of churches, radio and TV shows, he shared Dr. Falwell's changed philosophy of Y2K.

Since January of 1999, Christian Computing Magazine has been unaware of any public statements concerning Dr. Falwells stand on Y2K. However today, Christian Computing Magazine received the following statement from Dr. Falwells staff, making his position much clearer.

The fax stated:

"Since my series of messages on Y2K in August, 1998, I've been pleased with the substantial progress that has been made in both the government and private sector in dealing with this matter. I normally don't agree with Rev. Falwell on most issues in the world. But I do commend him for having the courage to come forward and pulling his video from the market as he has determined that the Y2K issue won't be as bad as he first felt in 1998.

I think just the opposite, It's a case of CYA. After all, he did his bit for king and country by giving an early warning. Now he just doesnt want to look like a fool if nothing happens. Plausible deniability in either case- it's what I would do.

If he thinks his old video is too extreme now, maybe he should produce an updated one. I wouldn't.

The entire computer programming profession will get a black eye for the next hundred years because of y2k, regardless of how it turns out. For Falwell, however the downside of his old position was unbalanced. Now, he can always claim that back in 1998 "those idiots" had things all screwed up but by a miracle somehow they managed to kluge things together.

They dont call it antidiscordianism for nothing.

-- quasimodo (hunchback@belltower.com), May 21, 1999.

Does this mean that in December he'll reverse his position yet again?

MEDIA NOTE: The videotape entitled, "Y2K: A Christians Guide to the Millennium Bug" that accompanied Rev. Falwells Original Y2K messages in August 1998 is once again being offered.

When the religious leader Falwell authors a site as extensively researched and meticulously documented as Gary North, I will give credence to his opinion. And not before.

Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one [like Falwell, Hewitt, or Poole] deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming I am the Christ, and will deceive many [about Y2K]" (Matt. 24:4-5).

-- White Horse (first@seal.rev), May 22, 1999.

gn@sucks.booty: 1 wrong story out of 10,000 that he has posted. A story that also fooled the rest of the world's journalists.

Man. You're tough.

-- a (a@a.a), May 22, 1999.

White Horse,

Although I do not believe that I have ever said this of anyone, you are despicable and a coward. You equate me with a false prophet using a false name and address. You make no attempt to challenge me in person (or even in email), yet make this statement. You call me a false prophet by name, because I USE my name in this forum and on every thing I write. Yet, you use an alias. I challenge you to contact me in person, and I ask for a meeting between me, and whatever person you call pastor, to answer these charges. (Don't worry, I will fly to where ever you are at my expense).

For the rest of those reading this that are Christians. Forget Y2K. This kind of nonsense in forums like this MUST be challenged. If you are going to ignore this as rhetoric, and just part of the price to be paid for such discussions I disagree. Call me a fool, call me a Polly, call me an idiot, but to call me a false prophet requires a challenge according to the scriptures that this person uses to make this charge.

I know he will not come forth. He will not follow Biblical instructions on how he is supposed to handle this, or my charge to him that I am offended. For those that believe Y2K is something more than I do, I can respect your opinion, but I pity you that this is the type of individuals that follow your position.

-- Steve Hewitt (steve@ccmag.com), May 22, 1999.

Steve,

You beat me to it. It's OK to disagree; but I've never claimed to be a prophet of any type -- true, false, or fill-in-the-blank.

If anything, I've spent the last several months questioning the predictions of the so-called Y2K Prophets ... who, thus far, have failed miserably.

-- Stephen M. Poole, CET (smpoole7@bellsouth.net), May 22, 1999.

Let's think about this. "For many will come in my name,", so they will purportedly be Christians.

And for the scripture to make sense used in this way, Y2K would have to be a crisis, otherwise nothing noteworthy would occur. If its a crisis, that lets Gary North off the hook.

Sounds like White Horse might be right on the money.

-- a (a@a.a), May 22, 1999.

Can't believe you guys are still missing it. Poole posts stuff like this to get exactly the kind of furor in this thread. Then, he goes over and chuckles with his more intelligent buddies at debunker. Just shine it. We've more important stuff.

Carlos

-- Carlos (riffraff1@cybertime.net), May 22, 1999.

I see that the name calling has hit a all time low with this thread. Claiming that Steve Hewitt, Stephen Poole, and others are the anti- christ.

-- Pat (BAMECW@aol.com), May 22, 1999.

a@a.a you are lower than low. white horse needs to be put down. thanks for keeping the level of discussion to such high standards you 2. what idiots.

I think Carlos made the right statement with "Then, he goes over and chuckles with his more intelligent buddies at debunker."

I feel very ashamed to to have ever associated with the extremists on this forum.

Mr. Hewitt & Mr. Poole,

Jesus clearly warned believers that many would come in his name and would deceive many believers into believing lies that would cost them their lives. The warnings He gives about the end of this age in Matt. 24:3-10 parallel the seals He opens in Revelation 6:1-11.

Matt. 24:4-5 -- Many Christians will deceive many other Christians
Rev. 6:1-2 -- 1st seal/white horse and rider given authority and allowed to conquer (with deception)

Matt. 24:6-7 -- Many wars and rumors of wars
Rev. 6:3-4 -- 2nd seal/red horse and rider with great sword who takes peace from the earth so men will kill each other

Matt. 24:7 -- Famine
Rev. 6:5-6 -- 3rd seal/black horse and rider with scales to weigh out precious food stuffs because famine has made food scarce and expensive

Matt. 24:7-8 -- Pestilence, earthquakes, sorrows
Rev. 6:7-8 -- 4th seal/pale horse and rider (Death) who comes to take away 1/4 of the world's population (from the effects of all four horses combined)

Matt. 24:9-10 -- Hatred of Christians and martyrdom
Rev. 6:9-11 -- Martyrdom of Christians

Mr. Hewitt and Mr. Poole, I'm sorry that you are both so highly offended by the truth. But I called neither of you false prophets. You are fulfilling the very words of Christ in your actions, and I am simply pointing that out to those who have an ear to hear. Because of your debunking and ridiculing position on Y2K, millions of believers will die. Their blood will be on your heads.

The white horse is now riding...

-- White Horse (first@seal.rev), May 22, 1999.

White Horse,

I noticed that you refused to give me the opportunity for reconciliation as outlined in the very Bible you quote so strongly. Why? Are you ashamed to meet me with your pastor and explain this kind of backstabbing and misuse of scripture? If you are right, then you should have nothing to fear from stepping into the light. Unless, as the scriptures say is John 3:!9 you prefer darkness because your deeds are evil

-- Steve Hewitt (steve@ccmag.com), May 22, 1999.

Steve,

What's this crap about "meet me with your pastor". Do you guys need chaperones or something?

-- Religious BS detector (is@going.off), May 22, 1999.

Mr. Hewitt,

Sir,

The vehemence of your outrage seems a bit overblown.

I am a Christian of 30 years. In that light, I would humbly suggest a review of Mr. White Horse's initial post. The fact that it is used out of context should indicate that it cannot be interpreted literally. Likewise, the fact that words and phrases are inserted.

As a fellow Christian, I believe that it is just as important to know how properly to respond to this perceived charge. An intemperate retort can be more damaging to your character than the initial accusation. Perhaps you were too hasty with an acrimonious response. (Proverbs 15:1) This is truth even when applied to the charge you assume has been leveled against you. Perhaps a request for clarification of the poster's intent would have been in order, rather than "Ready, Shoot, Aim." He might have apologized or moderated his stance if the severity of the "offense" (as you saw it) had been explained. But I have seen this form of righteous indignation all too often. The name-calling and application of John 3:19 are unworthy of you. If you jump to conclusions regarding Y2K in a like manner, then I begin to have my doubts about those conclusions.

Unless you are a *true* prophet of the Lord, that is, your predictions have never been wrong, then they (your predictions) are just as capable of error, and therefore potentially misleading to others. If you wish to quibble over the differences between "deceive" and "mislead" then my point is lost. Yet you do not shrink from making that same accusation of those who feel the consequences may be more severe than you envision.

IMHO, Mr. Hewitt, you do not understand the seriousness of the public position you have taken. I have read some of your articles, and have listened to your viewpoint with RealAudio. You are strenuous in your opinions and, I believe, sincere in your conviction. However, if you are as certain in the following statement: "I know he will not come forth." as you are of your predictions for Y2K, then your own words condemn you.

If this post has offended you in any way, rather than provide some small measure of light on the subject, I sincerely ask your forgiveness in advance.

-- Elbow Grease (Elbow_Grease@AutoShop.com), May 22, 1999.

with all these christians spewing sectarian rhetoric, let's give a few facts to consider for buddhism;1 the only world religion that does not encourage bloodshed to force converting.2 the only world religion whose founder claimed NO supernatural influence.3 preaches tolerance of all religions.4 all spiritual benefits are obtained through human effort and dilligence(no supernatural gods) now play nice and wake up!

Gents,

Lest I offend my, "....his more intelligent buddies..." was strictly tongue in cheek. Should have written "...his intelligensia buddies..." perhaps. Twas past bedtime for this Bonzo.

But, this morning you're still giving the Pooles chuckle ammo. Makes them come back. Try E-mail maybe?

Mr. Hewitt, Poole, et al

Let it go. These twisters of Scripture have no idea how to properly handle the truth of the Word of God. They twist it, "to their own destruction" as Paul says. You both know that Christians will not put Christians to death. The FALSE church will, and always has fulfilled that roll.

The blind leading the blind...

let it go. "don't cast your pearls before swine, or they may turn and rend you to pieces".

-- Bible Thumper (Jesus@my.defense), May 22, 1999.

Elbow Grease,

Thank you for your thoughtful post. I have been a Christian for almost 30 years and pastoring for the last 14.

For the last several months, I have been lurking and listening to "Christian" posts. For such an unending debate (usually due to the inability of proving either side wrong), I'm afraid our Lord is the one ending up with the short end of the stick so to speak.

It truly is sad that so many have books to plug or magazines to sell or whatever. I think many have become confused and confusing. Thank you for bringing some reason to this forum entry.

That only He might increase,

tim

Mr. Hewitt,

I really do think you are going overboard here. Maybe White Horse is just having a little fun. Anyway if you are really eager to make that airplane trip to engage in your style of "Christian reconciliation," you may now consider me as a stand-in for White Horse. I live in Austin TX. I can meet you at Austin Bergstrom airport any Friday or Saturday. Your challenge is now accepted.
