Heads up: Community Preparedness on a National Level

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I lurked on Community Conversations teleconference today (sponsored by the Presidents Council on Y2K).

Today's call had serious GIs such as Chuck Lanza representing emergency management.

I'm still trying to communicate with the list server, so I'm going to hold off on posting notes. Other participants will do a better job of writing them up...

But, here's the deal. A serious attempt to establish connections between community preparedness groups up and down the food chain is underfoot. Monday, there will be a press conference to announce the intention of the project. (at least, that's my understanding of what's to happen.)

The next teleconference is June 3rd. And, BTW, they put the call through. No charge to you.

Our individual efforts to encourage preparedness will never even make the footnotes of history. There are few sources of power in today's society. Wealth, organization, information, communication. If the federal government gave us assistance with organization and communication, we could mount a credible campaign against the menace of unpreparedness.

Critt,

Sorry if I missed it, but under what format is this teleconference given? By POTS telephone only, or can it be accessed over the Net (by RealPlayer, MS Media Player, whatever)? or both? or one of the netphone formats, even

That would seem to be something we all could benefit by. Whatever our persuasion.

Chicken,

Nothing special needed. You can receive the call in the comfort of your home.

Send email to Susan Hinden at susan.hinden@gsa.com

I didn't catch the cutoff date for signing up for June 3rd, but I would do it right now. Getting on their list server will be a huge plus.

Oh, FWIW, this ain't no 2-3 day bump-in-the-road support group...

Chicken,

I didn't complete my answer (too much caffeine).

My guess is that POTS is the only access, but I think your suggestion would be supported. I don't know what kind of effort is involved to interface to the other formats. Cost may be a constraint.

Thanks guys. Sounds like a cool thing, whatever format (guess I can deal with an old-fashioned telephone LMAO)
