Does ANYONE have any idea where Cory gets his timeline from?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Cory, in the "ya gotta have paid for this" section of his website suggests a time line that has a Fed Announcement of some type VERY DIFFERENT from the current mantra

between May 17 and May 25th

Does ANYONE have more than this?

ANd, yes he asks us not to post Members Only stuff outside, so I'm not. Just want to know if some of the other folk who are connected have any ideas. And I'm going to toss him a question too. Chuck

i certainly hope they are going to announce u.s. standards for y2k remediation, although i won't hold my breath waiting. or that they will armtwist small businesses into fixing their systems. i won't hold my breath for that either.

Chuck, I have heard a rumor that the President's Y2k Council (not the official name) has plans to announce support for community groups espousing preparedness. If I interpreted the rumor correctly, there may also be some grant money for the support of y2k community groups.

Please understand that my comments may be totally off-base, but you seemed to want to know the unofficial scuttlebutt. I'm not making up what I heard, nor can I vouch for its accuracy as it's at least third hand.

At this point, even if BJ Clinton himself came out and said "the sky is falling, everybody do the 'Y2K panic'", I don't know if that would change much. I wouldn't trust BJ to tell me what time it is. The "Wag the Dog" (conspiracy) theories would run rampant.

Then again, if Dan Blather (and peers) wanted to, they could generate real change in public opinion. Blather could definitely make Joe & Jill Sixpack see "the spoon" (see previous "spoon" posts) whether it was there or not.

Just when I started thinking Y2K was a non-issue...

Those of us in the D.C. area keep hearing this. Koskinen actually talked at length,at a Y2K meeting at the National Cathedral, about making a statement to the public about having community town meetings. I expected it to have happened before this. (Cory was at that meeting and I spoke with him for a few minutes). I think the feds must enjoy jerking us (those of us who risk speaking out publicly) around. This "announcement" has been about to come out for months. "They", the feds, keep saying it will happen. Those who were told about it report on what they have been told and then they look like idiots because we are all still waiting, and waiting, and waiting...

anonymous,

There are only a handful of Congresscritters even investigating Y2K. I listened to Bennett do an interview the other day, and he didn't even mention it -- kind of strange if it's the Hot Topic and Important Issue that Y2K'ers assume it is.

Official Washington has realized for some time that the issue is dying out for lack of interest on the part of the public.

I wouldn't be holding my breath too long for Klinton to step in and approve of communities banding together and preparing for Y2K. It's never in the government's best interest for anyone to take charge of themselves. Government regulations are in every aspect of our daily lives, however, that hasn't stopped me from preparing for what I forsee as a very bleak future. Just keep quiet about your preparations and it's every man for himself.

Mr. Poole,

I think your speculation regarding Washington "a handful of Congresscritters" is incorrect.

I assure you, as someone with some inside dish (close family member working for a Senator in D.C.), that Senators and Congresspersons are very aware of Y2k. Unfortunately they must bounce back and forth between priorities and most use their media exposure when it is presented to them to speak about the priority at hand. Also, I believe I am correct in writing that members and their staffers have actually been hit by y2k remediation failures already.

By the way, I'm very proud of my close family member and the work they are doing. Oh, and they "get it" too. Major preps underway.

As for the May timeline I have no clue. However, I suspect that any delay in some announcement can be attributed to the search for and hope for good news. Why go public if you can avoid it?

"Just keep quiet about your preparations and it's every man for himself."

I agree about keeping quiet about preps, but hopefully we won't go Mad Maxx. I'm very fond of specialists such as doctors, and many others who do specialized work.

Excluding the lazy, we need each other. Heck, even the lazy make great consumers during good times - somebody has to buy pet rocks! Too bad they all vote for folks like BJ Clinton, though...

If Clinton announces federal grant money for local prep groups, you can rest assured that the funds are already earmarked for friends of Bill who see this another way to milk the public treasury. Look for the same list of "community service" and "outreach" groups that get all the money in the "help the children" and "help the cities" grants.

Even if you could apply to be eligible for such a federal grant, it would probably take two years to get approved. And don't forget your kickbac... er, donations to Gore 2000 and the Clinton Presidential Library funds.

Agreed Wildweasel. I wouldn't touch a penny of government money on this issue. You can rest assured there will be plenty of takers for it though. And it will have almost no effect.

Money is not the issue. Honesty is the issue, even if it's merely admitting that nobody knows what will happen.
