Kerosene, shelf life ?greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread
I have been buying 5 gallon containers of kerosene from the local petroleum distributor. Does anyone have a good idea on the shelf life of the product if left in the steel can and unopened. I plan to use it for wick type lamps and a wick type heater. Thanks..

1) certainly hope it's K-1.
2) Seriously consider the Kero version of STABIL so it doesn't mold from any moisture in the can.

Thanks Chuck; I'm working on the kero situation right now. Does anyone have a link to the kero/STABIL product? Phone number?

Capt Dennis Stabil is located at Wal-mart in the automotive section ,they have some for gasoline and kerosene fuels, which is also diesel, without the additives. Hope this will help, Furie...

Can't find the earlier thread that hit on this subject, but a guy who was a kero dealer for 20 years gave us some straight info regarding shelf life of K-1. He said it will keep for years will no problem (no precise number of years). As Chuck mentioned, it can can moldy as water separates from the kero over time (though less likely with K-1), so a plastic container is better (due to rust). He also mentioned that the water separates to the bottom of the container. So pour off the good stuff and discard when you hit water/mold.
Hope this helps.
