Predictions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ontario 2000 : One Thread

Let's have some fun before the Canada 2000 site closes down in a few days. Let's go wide in unbridled speculation on what you think will happen during 'The Y2K Years". Sort of an estimate of what our future generations will be reading and thinking about in their University 'Y2K Studies' for the next few hundred years.

I'll be looking over my notes and adding something throughout the remaining days. Simply write your predictions in point form only. Get the main ideas out quickly with a reason if you feel so inclined or just 'put it out there'. Till then, have fun, contribute or just pop in daily for the latest. Enjoy.

My predictions;

* stock markets will crash somewhere in the world. I can't predict how much the domino effect will kick in when a few start going under around the world, but we can expect unprecedented spending on public relations and advertising tell us our money is safe. Whether people believe it or not, we can only guess. My hunch is that people will take measures to get out as quickly as possible in a sort or massive 'musical chairs'. The last ones still in lose their life savings.

* the above holds true for banks as well. They've been doing the 'warm and fuzzy' campaign lately in Canada to inform us how very loving and caring they are to the 'little people'. Ignore the fact that your father paid off his house in twenty years on a fixed 4% interest while your mother could stay home taking care of the kids. Ignore the spread between Prime Rate and credit card rates. Ignore the farmers being driven into bankrupcty only to be bought out by 'friends of the bank' mega-conglomerates. Ignore their history of bleeding countries with interest rates that put the workforce into financial slavery paying high taxes and prices. Above all, ignore the fractional banking system of non-existent electronic money. Most people do not like banks despite the new public image building going on.

* expect some entire regions of the world to go back into the Dark Ages, literally! Help won't be arriving soon if at all. All countries will be taxed to the extreme to keep their own house in order. Some governments, depending on their political bent and their general attitude toward their citizens, will go overboard on suppression of legal and Human Rights. Some governments will fall in the worst hit countries. Many lives will be lost in power struggles and starvation. Expect massive economic and disaster refugees swarming to areas 'perceived' to be more safe, though many will be wrong. Canada will take in Americans. Americans won't be able to hold their border with Mexico. Europe will be a 'melting pot' with people travelling far and wide to seek refuge.

* expect ALL foreign forces to be called back home before the New Year. If not, expect massive desertions once word of troubles back home filter through the extensive News black-outs. CNN and other major News services to work with the governments to hide major problems, especially in economic matters. They'll be bribed by government with advertising dollars later in the disruptions as their corporate client base dry up from major failures, mostly those heavily invested off-shore or selling luxury items.

More later, Gary

More Predictions;

* expect public panic this Fall. Panic is good. It pumps up the survival necessity level to take actions needed immediately. Denialist is a temporary label in regards to Y2K. Similar to the World Wars, most everyone will acknowledge it happening. Complacent people will pay for their lack of foresight. Unfortunately, due to their overwhelming numbers, they'll also make everyone properly prepared, pay by taking what they need, regardless of ownership or laws of the land.

* unless legal liability laws are changed, I expect executives, board of directors, private owners of businesses that do harm to the public or their shareholders, lose their fortunes and some will be imprisoned. The public will be outraged when it's later discovered that some elites are put under house arrest within their mansions or 'imprisoned' in luxury hotels. Lesser mortals, when confronted with jail time, will commit suicide rather than be victimized by the scum prison populace. Expect light sentences unless the far-left wing (perhaps a new party) take power.

* expect The End Of The World As We Know It (TEOTWAWKI). The world is presently in constant change anyway. Everything is being altered, both quantively and qualitatively, but the speed of change will leave many unable to rapidly adapt to the new situations. Some will thrive on the new challenges, others will succumb, just as it's always been, only now, it will depend more on quick, sound judgement with very little 'real' data to work with (more 'flying by the seat of your pants' and intuition). Decisions by committee or nine month investigations before rendering a course of action will be a thing of the past.

* many disasters will occur of all types. The social structure and the fabric of modern civilization will be transformed practically over night (please read 'Y2K Wild Cards' linked off the Main page or the Canadian Awareness topic).

* When excess materialism seems fruitless, a new spiritual revival, an Awakening, so to speak, will occur on a broad scale. Many new cults and 'old religion' denominations will grow rapidly. Many based on a 'New World Citizen' premise where as "I am a citizen of the World, without old ethnic. I will follow the rules of this society, but I remain innately an anarchist. I will question your authority and demand truth in your dealings with me." Knowledge found in religious scriptors and the writings of great philosophers will be re- discovered. This could eventually be the 'New World Order'.

Perhaps more later,
