Why worry?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The sun has come up on another day. We had a gentle rainfall last night that's playing it's part in germinating this years crops. These cycles will continue regardless of what happens in 8 months.

The earth will provide for us, if we let it...and if we learn how to use what it offers.

Tell that to a single black mother who lives in one of the ghettos of NYC, Gary, or LA. Ask her if her crops are coming up.....through the side walk cracks?? Get real. There is plenty to worry about......., especially if thats all you have is worry! We that have some preparations are damned fortunate to have the wherewithall to do this. So don't give the rest of the world this don't worry crap. Yes the sun will come up and the rain will fall...but will the farmer get his seed planted? Harvested? Will it get to market when the railroads can't find their cars now and its not even 2000 yet. And will it get to that single mother and child in the ghetto in an edible form? She doesn't have a grain grinder and doesn't know how to make bread. She hasn't a window sill to put a flower pot on let alone have a garden. Too many of us seem to be getting very smug with our preparations done......me included. We better hope there is no TV as that homemade bread is going to choke you when you see the children and the elderly dying of cold and hunger in our own country. Even if the gov't said prepare, there are soooooooo many that cannot. I keep acting like I live on an island but every now and then I get a reality check and it scares the hell out of me. We talk about shooting intruders. Well, what about the family with 3 hungry, cold and dirty kids in tow? You going to shoot them too? Really not meaning to flame you Dan....just venting some of my frustrations. Guess I had better up my Prozac. LOL

oh,yeah, wow, man!! and like...the earth goddess will give birth to non-hybrid seeds from her blessed organic yonii and we'll all live in a post-Y2k paradise with food co-operatives on every corner!!!tofu is not date related!!!co-ops rarly use computers,man!.....eat a hippy for christ...good source of protien(not veal)

-- Zoobie (zoob@aol.com), April 22, 1999.

Guess what? We only use non hybris seeds up here. And we don't need cooperatives, cuz we have these wonderful things called GARDENS and this really neat preservation process called CANNING.

Dan- yes, the earth will provide for us if we let it. BUT- not at the present population levels in urbanized environments. It may be true that at a much reduced level of population in rural environments this could be so again, but that also means many millions(billions?) would perish before that happened. This is not insignificant to those that would be impacted due to they or their loved ones suffering and dying. So- Taz is right. You may "got yours", but lots don't. Can you do anything at this point to help that? I don't really know.

So yes- these cycles will continue, with us or without us. But if you are thoughtful, it is a matter of great concern.

SO YOU FEEL FINE BECAULSE YOUR ASS IS TAKEN CARE OF AND THE SUFFERING OF OTHERS JUST DOESN'T TOUCH YOU...WELL THANKS FOR RENEWING MY FAITH IN HUMANITY,I KNOW,I KNOW,MEL BROOKS SAID IT BEST..."FU** THE POOR!"

You're assuming here that I am rich. Far from it...most people here probably make considerably more than my family. The difference is, I'm making prudent use of what's freely available to me.

-- Daniel Buchner (dbuchner@logistics.calibersys.com), April 22, 1999.

Talk about not getting it....you really don't ,do you? I am shaking my head in amazment. I too have a garden, have canned all my life including at least a 1000 lbs of elk, caribou or moose. Don't talk to me about prudent use of resources. You are just one smug bastard and I for one don't care to have any more to do with you. You are probably an "open Bible, Close Mind" dude too. And you are a dude..which means to us that have been around this planet, that you REALLY DON'T KNOW YOUR ASS FROM A HOLE IN THE GROUND!

i APOLOGIZE TO THE REST OF THIS FORUM FOR MY WORDS. But this guy really knew what button to push with me. TAZ

Daniel, you must be a troll. Please tell me you are because if you're not, then I have a feeling there are more like you out there. You know, like roaches--you see one, there's a thousand in the walls.

You say you're making prudent use of what's freely available to you. Where the hell do you live--Eden? You don't have apples, serpents, droughts, floods, frosts, tornadoes, crop failures, insect plagues, plant diseases where you live? Nothing to worry about, huh? Well, you'd better worry about those urban dwellers who'll be glad to make use of what they consider is freely available to them--like their weaponry and your garden. Might not happen. But on the other hand, are ya feeling lucky, punk? I guess you are.

Nothing more to say, Taz said it all! 'Way to go, Taz!

Wow! Your anger and resentment are unbelievable! And all I said was that I'm planting a garden and am not worried about the catclysm! I shudder to think what you people would accomplish if you were to focus this anger on something constructive!

And by the way, I do consider where I live to be as close to Eden as a place can be. And no, I'm not worried about the urban warriors - I have the local militia to take care of them for me.

As far as bible thumping...well, I believe that God will help those that help themselves.

Reference article on Ariz. Farm Bureau President Ken Evan's Senate testimony at:

http://www.y2ktimebomb.com/Industry/Agriculture/creg9908.htm "Whereas the American farmer produced enough food to feed eight people a hundred or so years ago, the farmer today produces enough to feed 212, on average."

Technology has allowed us to support a larger population. Interruptions in that technology may have reverse effects, depending upon amount of the food/fiber in storage to bridge repairs, availability and ability to disperse where needed.

On related note, GITs that have acquired skills of self-sufficiency are like seeds scattered throughout the land. If their preparations are finished and their skills are practiced and honed, they can serve as (willing?) teachers for later GITs. If you are of religious or spiritual mind, consider that perhaps GITs are chosen for such purposes. "When the student is ready, the teacher will arrive."

If DGITs awaken early enough, each ready GIT has to consider whether to hole up in his bunker or to help empower others, who are able and willing, to become more self-sufficient in taking care of their own needs.

I recently asked my son's boss if he would install something for me. He said he would "teach my son how to do it for me." (I realize I can't try to acquire every skill - there needs to be some intra-family specialization.) This is a far greater gift to me and to my son.
