The Bonneville Power Administration and Y2K

The following is an excerpt from the Bonneville Power Adminstration's statement concerning Y2K readiness:

As of April 2, chief information officer for the Bonneville Power Administration (located in Portland, OR) Joe O'Rourke stated: "If January 1, 2000 were to come tomorrow, I am confident that BPA's part of the power system would continue to operate safely and reliably."

Ron Cook, Y2K Project Coordinator for the US Corps of Army Engineers Northwestern Division office, said the Corps operated systems have undergone a complete inventory for Y2K readiness and assessment. "Our mission systems and facilities are fully Y2K compliant. Manual controls allow us to meet critical operational needs at our hydro power and flood control projects, navigation locks and fish migration systems," said Cook.

The Bonneville Power Administration tested their systems almost two weeks ago by rolling their clocks into 2000. There was no problem with either power or their equipment.

Since we live in an area serviced by the BPA, we are happy to report that there was no loss of power and no problems as a result of BPA's testing.

Good news - let's hope they continue working next year as well.

Any info about the BPA's original/actual budget for Y2K? Actual start time, original schedule duration vs actual complete date? Knowing this (even in a hydro- heavy utility) would give some clues about coal/nuke heavy utilities in the SouthEast (FL) and NorthEast. This shows that TVA should be able to finish in time, if they started on time.

It is *exactly* press releases like this (and various others) which make me say that any truly Y2K ready or compliant or whatever company or organization should simply say so. No more of this "the lawyers won't let us tell you how great of shape we're in." Ridiculous. If you're ready, or internally ready, say so. Period. If companies like this (and others) can do this, they all should be able to, I would think.
