Good luck Patrick! I see you got your name up in lights at the GN site.

The farewell address of Larry Sanger is telling: I can make a few little comments about news reporting, however. First, I am extremely disappointed at the obvious Y2K information cover-up that's been going on. This is one (but only one) reason why my stint as Y2K news summarizer has generally lowered my already none-too-stellar estimate of the honesty of most people. (Along these lines, I recommend David O'Daniel Eddy's column, linked below.) Second, unlike some others, events of recent months have not made me more optimistic than I was when I first began summarizing the news. The main reason for this is that it's just obvious that we aren't being told the full story. To some extent this is not the fault of reporters; no doubt organization talking heads are making the job of investigating the actual, hard, detailed facts about the Y2K status of different governments, companies, industries, etc., very difficult. But to some extent, no doubt it is their fault, or the fault of their editors (I am sure that some news organizations, such as Ziff-Davis, have an editorial policy against much "bad news").

Obviously I could say more, but I'll just leave it at that.

pshannon: I am really happy to see that good things are happening for you. I have been meaning to tell you that whenever I see a post from you, my mind always goes back to when you coined the term Don't Wanna Get It - on a thread a long, long, time ago, in the archive far, far, away - a term that has since been used continually. Best of luck always, Rob.

pshannon, I look forward to reading your work. Beware the "Stepford Bellwether" syndrome. The town crier role seems to cause unexplained pollyanism in otherwise thoughtful folks. On the other hand, I hope we don't see you running through the streets this fall yelling "Soylent Compliancy is bugs! Soylent Compliancy is bugs!"

Good luck.

pshannon, we are happy for you & proud of you!
Don't get too busy to come visit & spout at your old haunt ;^}

Hi gang,

Thanks for the kind words (and the funny ones ;-)

Ya'll realize, of course, that it was this forum that set me on the course to doing the Sanger's thing. Couldn't have done it without all the feedback and perspective from here. I haven't been participating much here lately, though I do at least lurk everyday. This forum is an incredible resource, no matter what the naysayers may say. I actually do expect to step up my participation here a bit more, now that I'm getting a clearer picture of my workflow. And, I intend to post the daily brief.

Cheers!

Patrick,

My sincerest congratulations - they say you should have a job which is a labour of love - let's all fervently hope that Gary is wrong and that journalists (for you are now one :) ) will be extinct shortly... in the meantime you have one of the most important jobs on this planet - to spread THE WORD - for good or ill people need to be AWARE of what is going on - I'm sure in your hands they will have a fighting chance of making the right decisions for themselves and their loved ones.

Godspeed - the Guinness is on me should we ever meet in the big apple:)

P.S.

What ever did happen on the blind dates - any luck???

Enquiring minds need to know :)
