Got an advertising insert with today's newspaper for Macey's Supermarket in Ogden, Utah. The header with its balloons, streamers and confetti was suggestive of New Year's Eve-- FOOD STORAGE SUPER SALE!
Hurry in for best selection...ALL ITEMS While supplies last DUE TO INCREDIBLE DEMAND!

Listed were 50lb bags of winter wheat and milk substitute, 25lb bags of salt, pinto beans and flour, #10 cans of instant dry milk. The most interesting items though, were the Family Grain mills and the 5-, 15-, and 55-gal. plastic water storage containers.

ok---wait a minute...dateline ogden utah? isnt that like the largest populace of mormons outside of salt lake city? dont all mormons have to stock up for at least a years worth of food anyway, whether there is a crisis or not? if dateline read, peoria, i might take a bit more notice than ogden utah...please, no flamers about being anti mormon, I'm not, i just want to keep this y2k thing in proper perspective for all ok?

I don't know from experience, but I think that most Mormons stock up from within the church,..mormon canneries and such...However...Max might be able to tell us more.

Billy- true, there are quite a few mormons hereabouts. Ogden's share is probably about 60% I would guess, taking into account the size of our hispanic population.

Donna- yes, most active LDS people buy their storage food through their local stake, or can it themselves at one of the many "bishop's storehouses". My neighbor gets a monthly order blank from his church. As for the inactive LDS-- "jack mormons"-- they may be the ones most likely to purchase from a supermarket. Most people around here think food storage is a good thing, regardless of their religious affiliation.

I've noticed the Mennonite store in my area, where I bought most of my long term food, is now stocking 55 gal. water barrels, and food bucket openers.

BTW, back in Feb, judy, posted: "Bucket opener, screw-on lids update," I ordered two bucket openers and she was right, the openers were cheap, the Texan (Midland) "very nice," and they arrived in 5 days. Our local Smiths supermarket just started a whole aisle on "Family Preparedness", complete with 6 gal buckets of wheat, rice, etc., 55 gal blue water barrels, candles, and more. Congratulations to them for taking an open, pro-active stance.
