Spring, SVRWX, WSR88 Compliance Query

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Now that it's spring, and we have had our first deadly tornado, does anyone know about the compliance of the WSR88 Dopler Radar used by Nat'l Weather Service?? I know that last year, when I mentioned compliance in passing in our local NWS office, the folks I mentioned it to were, umm, less than positive in their reactions. At least that's how I interpreted the chorus of bronx cheers. Kind of like being in the midle of a Berke Breathed Nightmare, surrounded by Bill the Cat's.

to be honest, none of these folks were responsible for programming, etc. they were just radar operators.

Before all of you discount this in terms of "what was an effing driver doing in a weather service forcast center??" The answer is, this is where the SKYWARN liaison station is, and I was keeping the guys in touch with the spotter nets.

got bicycles? got little dogs got munchkins? isn't this Kansas? got red pickups?

Chuck I asked basically the same question at the National Hurricane Center and was referred to the NWS who has yet to answer two letters that I have sent.

Got tie downs??

Don't let Toto roam too far. Review what you know of the Emerald City, and the ethnic moieties thereabouts. Mind the monkeys. If the Phanfasms appear, hide. Guys in metal suits are OK. If you see a pair of red shoes, pick 'em up.

Read them all, long ago. Gripping stuff, at the time.

chuck, you may want to have a look at the NWS y2k page at http://www.osol.x3.nws.noaa.gov/y2k. maybe you would hotlink it? i have it bookmarked, but haven't looked at it in a while.

oops, it's not osol, it's oso1. the number 1, not the letterl. so the whole thing is http://www.oso1.x3.nws.noaa.gov/y2k.

the NWS answer was:::

Mr. R*****, The entire suite of WSR-88D products has been tested and determined to be Y2K compliant at the point of distribution from the NEXRAD system. If your source for WSR-88D data is a NIDS provider, you will need to contact your NIDS provider to inquire of their Y2K status. Thanks. Howard, read your FAQ, and wanted to confirm that the statement "NEXRAD has been determined to be compliant" includes the WSR88 and the full suite of products developed at the PUP Console. Thank you for your attention and time. de N8NLL Chuck , one of the SKYWARN liaison communicators at NWSCLE.
