Does any one know the purpose of this filter ? I have a canon 85-300 zoom that takes series 9 filters and want to know if this is a good filter. Thank you, Tom.

Magenta filters remove excess green. It may be helpful when shooting color under fluorescent lights, or when doing outdoor portraiture where the subject is surrounded by shrubbery. 40M is a fairly strong filter for these purposes though. You might consult the Kodak or Tiffen web sites and ask your question there.
