It's frustrating, for sure -- you may remember the header of the post you're looking for, but there's no telling what Category was assigned to it. So once in the archives, it's buried, unless you've got an hour or so to open every Category. Of course, you might get lucky and find it in 30 minutes.

Sometimes searching the New Answers URL will turn up the thread in question, but only if there has been recent activity.

Did you try using your browser's search function on words that you recall or guess were in the thread's title? I.e., your browser can search on the thread titles, at least. (I ask for the sake of newbies reading this. :-)
