Looking for Middle Ground in North Carolina

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I will be driving a loop through North Carolina next week (March 30 - Apr 1). My intention is to meet as many "Middle Grounders" as possible.

Here's the plan:

Tuesday: Wilmington to Asheville via I40

Wednesday: Hendersonville (as a base)

Thursday: Hendersonville to Wilmington via US74

If you would like to meet briefly, let me know.

Forgive my stupidity, what is a middle grounder in terms of Y2K?

Coming anywhere near Charlotte? Would love to hook up with a fellow "middlegrounder"...

Critt, what time will you be coming through Raleigh?

-- Puddintame (dit@dot.com), March 27, 1999.

Let me know when you'll be in the Charlotte area and I'll put aside some time.

Steve

Critt,

What time WILL you be in Raleigh? If you'll reply directly or post a time and place, I'd like to join whoever shows up (if the work schedule allows...).

Critt, I can get Sweetie to take me to Raleigh on Tuesday, arriving around 9 or 9:30 a.m., maybe later if S has no meetings. I can always hang around and wait for you guys in a coffee shop or something. (We might get lucky and have S take the morning off and join us.) If that's convenient and you could drop me off in Durham on your way to Asheville after that. . . Please let me know.

I'll post an update on connecting Middle Grounders tonight after 9pm North Carolina time (March 29th).

Also, please see the responses to Arnie's Middle Ground on EUY2K (thanks, Rick):

I'll come to you if you give me time and directions. I'm also open to a public place if someone has a suggestion.

Starting the day with Old Git? Better than coffee! Sorry, wouldn't resist.

If y'all around this area wouldn't mind the drive to Durham--and I'd be glad to show y'all bargains at Big Lots and lots of free shelving if you like--I'd be delighted to scout a suitable place. Honey's comes to mind, just off I-85, breakfast all day (great biscuits) and blue plate specials.

It would be marvellous to meet all of you--I'd offer my house but there's very little furniture because of moving. Tell you what, though, if you wouldn't mind sitting at an old dining table, I can provide some REALLY good coffee. (And I have plenty stashed, no problem with quantities!) I'm almost as close to 85 as Honey's--be glad to get in sticky buns or something. Hope The Hungarian can make it (she will if it's in the a.m.), she's a worse GI than moi.

Critt, what time were you thinking of getting here, give or take?

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), March 30, 1999.

Critt, I will try to meet you if I can arrange my schedule. As a suggestion, the Sheraton Imperial at RTP, 140 Page Rd., is fairly centrally located between Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. It's right off of 40. Their restaurant/coffe shop normally has plenty of room in the mornings.

Dang... I'm gonna miss your visit to Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill. I'd be carefull about going to Myrtle Beach on April 1st. Since Easter is this weekend and I am a 27 year native of Myrtle Beach, I can tell you the traffic will be horrendous at best.

Good ol' mom called last night to see if I was coming home for a visit this weekend. I fell off of the couch laughing at her suggestion. I asked her if she realized that it was Easter Weekend there.

She glanced at the calendar - gulped and said "Nevermind. Time to go to the grocery store and to the video store so that we don't have to leave the house over the long weekend."

BTW, I managed to FINALLY explain to her about the Y2K problem. It took over 2 years for her to understand the complexities and for me to overcome all of her objections fed to her by the pablum puking media. It was a great lift off of my shoulders. Now I have somewhere to take all of the stored food, TP and other supplies that are taking up space in my apartment. Her home is within 6 blocks of the ocean and within 2 miles of what we call "the country". She even had the plumber come out and fit the well in the backyard with a hand pump. Plenty of water to be had from the ocean if needed as well as a supply of food. It's been said of myself that I have sea water for blood as I take to the ocean as a proverbial fish to water.

Wish I could get up to RDU area, but work just won't allow it.

Noon - Puddintame, Critt is here in Durham - do you have any time to meet later this afternoon in Raleigh?
