Techie deflates bank bug-run prophesy

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Oh dear, The South China Morning Post, quoting our friend Declan...

"But technology expert Declan McCullagh disagrees.

"Once the newly minted money enters the banking system again - either from relieved depositors or through indirect spending on purchases - the banks will repay their loans to the [government] and we'll be back to normal,"

Do you really think that's the way it will work?

I thought I was gonna puke earlier today when I saw this story. Now it's the Ludwig von Mises Institute vs. Declan McCullagh. What has this debate become?

ROFLMAO. Hey, he's not only a journalist, he's a ....... technology expert! Thanks, Arnie, this is one of the highlights of the year.

Declan: good work. Your prostitution is paying off, finally.

Thanks Arnie,

This post says everything about the kind for reporting that is actually called reporting. LOL

Technology expert. I just lost my dinner.

-- sparks (wireless@home.com), March 25, 1999.

technology expert Declan McCullagh? Just because he's a reporter for Wired magazine? LOL That's a good one.

And based on his quote, he is apparently an economics expert as well. Go figure. I always thought he was just a wife beating twit.

The really sad thing is, Declan really *is* a technical expert compared to the people who write most of what we read. How many journalists or 10Q-author lawyers do you suppose have ever taken a computer course or written a program?

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), March 25, 1999.

Good point Flint. I apologize Declan.

-- a (a@a.a), March 25, 1999.

Not a wife beating twit. Just a girlfriend beating twit.

Gotta keep the details straight.

If true this guy's a pathetic loser. Anybody who hits a woman except in serious self-defense is a cowardly wimp, an emasculated puke.

I agree with your assessment, BigDog. Journalistic prostitute (isn't that redundant?).

-- Franklin Journier (ready4y2k@yahoo.com), March 26, 1999.

I think Declan's setting himself up as a Y2K authoritative expert for the post-2000 investigating/reporting that's going to be all the rage.

His portfolio/resume will be quite jam-packed by then. And, he's got material either way it goes, bump or mega-splat.

This is 2-3 years of bread & butter for him........

Who - where - when - the rumor about his girlfriend getting some good prep in for them? Why? I think he really is a 1........ if that.

-- Lisa (lisa@be.nicer), March 26, 1999.

Lisa -- You're right and that's my main beef with Declan and, actually, worse with De Jager. Sure, it's possible that they just sorta "changed" their minds, but I've worked with guys like this for two decades. They've hedged their professional bet so they win whichever way it goes and beat the house.

Yeah, everyone "does it" (think Slick), but it's no less despicable and, re both Declan-De Jager, where is the serious, honorable evidence of a change of mind. In Declan's case, he simply mocks us; De Jager turned on a dime with utterly inadequate evidence to support it.

It's also why Declan's girl-friend abuse is germane, because it fits with his character as, um, what was it? Oh, yeah, a "technology expert."
