The Grocery Store is Stocking Poly 55 Gal DRUMS?! A sighting report.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The local Smith's is now stocking the Blue 55 gal drums and pumps. They also have bulk foods in poly pails. And they have many of the federal handbooks for handout. The reason I comment on this is I have never seen this type of stuff for sale except in Utah and south central ID. It makes me so happy.I keep thinking there might be something to the religion stuff after all. No Flames please.

We have a Smith's in northern New Mexico, too. I'll check sometime today or tomorrow. Given the level of Y2K awareness in this town (5% of the population attended one of the recent Y2K community meetings), I wouldn't be surprised if they're starting to carry such things...

For heaven's sake, WHERE ARE YOU? What state?

We don't have any Smith's in our state. Is it a national chain?

Lets just say I live in the State of Confusion. Smiths is a regional chain which was recently bought out by Kroger. They haven't changed their name(Yet).

Thanks nine, I will check out my local Smith's in southern NM and post the findings.

AH Hah! We have Krogers in our state! I will be on the lookout! (By the way--just what were they charging for those 55 gallon drums?)

I saw a large blue plastic drum with a clamping gasketed lid at at farm store called Agri-Supply several months ago. I was told that it was OK for animal food but that it was not safe for human food. Does anyone know more about these barrels?

Since this forum has people from such diverse regions (and even diverse continents), one thing that would be REALLY helpful is, when folks find a product that is really cool or apparently available such as to grocery stores, if they got the info on the mfr., brand, product or part number, etc. That way, even though I don't have a Smith's anywhere near, I might be able to go to my local grocery store and say, 'I want this, can you get me this?' to the manager. I've done that before and they're usually very helpful. But I have to know the brand/maker and some info on the product in order for them to look it up in their pretty large catalogs. Just an idea.

And a great idea it is PJ! I think it would be helpful as well

Talked with someone in Odessa, TX and they said the GOv went to the Pepsi company down there(where they used to get the 55 gal drums from) and told them that they (gov) wanted all of them for the rest of the year.

This is great news that more helpful goods are becoming more readily available for more people.

Many thanks. Keep well,

Our local salvage yard (Mt. Pleasant, MI) has piles of 55 gallon drums with gasketed lids for $6 - $7.50 each depending on how many you buy. The drums had liquid silicone or some such inside, but in linings. The insides of the barrels shine like new, but I wouldn't want my food to touch it anyway. They do seal air-tight. We've gotten a few for us and others in our Homesteader's group, plenty more left. Still generators in stock at the local Quality Farm and Fleet too, which I take as an indicator that Y2K concern doesn't run too high around here.

Checked our Smith's in southern NM this afternoon. They had a pallet of 25# rice bags but that was all. I will check next week.

The Smiths here in Albuquerque started stocking 55 gallon plastic drums last week. Cost: 39.95 each. They also have pails of rice, beans and pasta in their bulk foods section, with a prominent sticker on them stating the contents will keep for 8-10 years.

I'm willing to bet that a whole lot of people who went to Smiths here this weekend "woke up"....
