Windup computer, too late

From today's Wired News:

The South African firm behind the Freeplay windup radio expects to power laptop computers with hand-cranked juice by next year.

Freeplay Power Group said Wednesday that it is working with General Electric on a small "clockwork generator" that will power laptops with the turn of a hand crank. The power pack is also expected to include a solar panel.

"We expect to have it ready to power up computers in the year 2000," said Rory Stear, joint chairman of Freeplay.

I heard this a week or so ago. I'm going to wait for the wind-up phone line internet connection model. <:)=

It's so funny that you mention this!

Just last night a friend was telling me about the 500 78rpm records that she bought for her wind up Victrola. Then we started joking about getting wind up computers and wind up internet connections for if there's no electricity. I was a good laugh.

I suppose it was "in the air..."
