greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hey everyone, Here are some fun ideas for the kids to do when all there toys are not working. I enjoyed these as a child and thought I would pass the recipes on to you.

SUBSTITUTE FOR PLAY DOUGH:

1/2 c. salt 1 c. flour 2 TBS veg. oil 1/2 c. water few drops food color

store in an air tight container.

SUBSTITUTE FOR CLAY:

1 c. salt 1/2 c. cornstarch 3/4 c. cold water mix ingredients together in a double broiler and heat stirring constantly 2-3 minutes until thick. Remove from heat and allow to cool and knead for several minutes until even consistency is attained it is now ready for use. This is an excellant substitute for clay because it doesn't shrink when dried and will harden to the consistency of stone and does not powder like clay.

COLORED SALT PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURES: You can use salt to make pretty colored salt paintings or to make beautiful bottled salt sculptures. Swparate desired portions of salt into various jars Like (baby food jars)Using a sharp knife scrape the edge of a piece of colored chalk, allowing the colored dust to fall into a jar of salt. Shake the jar of salt and colored dust ot produce colored salt. Once you have the desired colors, you can either combine them in layers in a jar to create a pretty sand sculpture or you can sprinkle it on paper treated with glue, as you would use glitter to create a unique painting.

WE CALL THIS FLUBBER

I don't remember the exact measurements to make this so just pour some together and if it is too sticky add more liquid starch, if it is too watery add more glue. All you need is plain elmers white school glue and liquid starch, and food color. This stuff is alot of fun. It is slimy and squishy and the kids seem to love it.

How about mud?

Here's another idea:

Instead of coloring the play dough with food coloring, add a package of kool-aid. This colors it as well as giving it a nice scent.
