Local News Nuclear Plants

David Lochbaun of the Union of Concerned Scientist said the NRC has audited only 12 of 103 operating nuclear plants to insure there preparedness and "needs to change from a being a spectator to being a regulator." The NRC's executive director for operations, William Travers testified to congress last month that the commission is confident that all plants will be Y2K ready by October.

Is this cutting it close or am I paranoid?

Caveman,

If the NRC waits until October and finds non-compliant plants, it will be too late to close them down safely. A plant requires a minimum of 4 months too cool down its core properly. If it loses outside power after that we could have a davastating problem.

My question is why is the NRC changing the deadline from July to October?

As Gary North has been saying for a couple years now, the continued existence of western civilization hangs in the balance of whether or not electic power can be sustained. And they say they are "sure" they will be done with 2 months to spare?

As Infomagic recently commented on the Italian (Roman) government's late start on y2k remediation: "They waited too long last time also"

No incredulous - you're wrong - on both counts. There is no schedule change by the NRC, and the "4 month cooldown" for nuclear power plants is urban legend - not technical fact.

After you've reviewed past "nuclear" related threads, and are ready to discuss your questions - if any have not been answered, and listen to the answers, please, ask again.

Hi Incredulous. Believe me, take Robert's advice. From what I've seen here, you won't find a better source on this topic than Mr. Cook, P.E. <:)=
