I just spent a half hour looking for something I remembered reading here about a month ago. FRUSTRATION!! Too much stuff here, too many threads with misleading titles, improperly classified, or great info showing up under some other title. (Oh, I know, I'm preaching to the choir - but..) Checked under 'Admin. & sysop' threads to see if anything has ever been explored re a search engine and - lo and behold - it looks as tho a lot of you kicked in for one back in Jan. Whatever happened to that? And I also see some reference to the original Oracle engine being brought back up in March. So what's up? Too much good stuff here getting buried. Need stuff...

cat, we were going to send $10, but didn't know *where* to send it. Now it is March, and the Oracle search engine is supposed to be fixed. Hopefully Mr. Yourdon or Mr. Greenspun will be able to address this. $10 is not much, but if all the regulars and lurkers sent in a $10 bill -- that would probably do it!

Was looking for a post on an FAA article from USA today that a couple of pilots responded to. But this happens frequently, for instance when thinking of asking a question and want to see if it's been answered already. Need search engine.

Will FAA make Y2K deadline?

WASHINGTON - Congressional auditors doubt that the Federal Aviation Administration adequately can correct its systems before the year 2000 deadline.

An official with Congress' investigative arm told the House Science Committee panel on technology that the FAA's projected dates for completing its overhaul are ambitious and overly optimistic.

''FAA has made progress in managing its year 2000 problem and has completed critical steps in defining which systems need to be fixed and how to fix them,'' said Joel C. Willemssen, director of the civil agencies information systems for the General Accounting Office.

''However, with less than 17 months to go, FAA must still correct, test and implement many of its mission-critical systems. It is doubtful that FAA can adequately do all of this in the time remaining,'' he said Thursday.

The Office of Management and Budget had set the end of March 1999 as the projected deadline for the agency to renovate and certify its systems completely. The FAA now says it will need an extra three months and will meet the goal by the end of June 1999.

FAA spokesman Paul Takemoto said the FAA will have 90% of its systems certified by March, leaving only the other 10% to be brought up to speed in the ensuing months.

The chairman of the Senate's Year 2000 Committee also expressed doubts despite the agency's reassurances.

''I wish I could say I'm confident in the claims of the FAA,'' said Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah. ''But given GAO's scathing reports, the FAA's assertions that it has made such tremendous progress are very questionable.''

No money changed hands.

I didn't get enough financial verbal/email commitment to go ahead with the project. ($8000 - $10,0000)

Also, if you read the threads on euy2k relating to the search engine, you will see how it evolved as well as the effort and time line from conception to launch.

I work 50+ hours a week renting Uhauls and storage space. And I have a family. And then there's this "y2k thing". If the response to a search engine had been overwhelming, I would have made the time.

It wasn' even close.

Kevin, that was the article, but I was really looking for the thread itself because a couple of pilots had posted after it. (The article itself was typical USA Today pablum.)Thanks a lot anyway, tho Kevin.

And thanks Critt for explaining. Maybe you want to add your current notes to the end of that thread so others looking for search engine stuff will understand what happened.

Ack! Crit, I missed that thread referenced by Cat above. I had already pledged on a different thread, but didn't know what came of it or where to send money, until now looking at the thread Cat pointed out posted in December :-(

One thing we CAN do, and I intend to do it "real soon now" is take alll of teh non-deleted daily updates, drop them into a directory and just use WIN95's "FIND" feature to get thread titles. Then it's a simple quick search to get the classification, and viola (or is that violoncello) the thread.
