EOS 5 Built-in flash cannot be pop-up

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I got an EOS 5 camera. Recently, the buil-in flash has not been automatically or manually pop-up. Do you know how to fix it?

Ken:

I have a Canon A2 (almost same as A5) and have the same problem. It needs to be repaired by Canon. I haven't done so yet because I don't use the built-in flash, just off-camera TTL flash. Call Canon at 1- 800-OKCANON to ask for the location of your nearest service center. Their minimum repair charge seems to be about $80. I wouldn't trust my camera to a non-Canon service center. If your camera's new and still under warranty then discuss it with your dealer 'cause you should not be charged for a warranty repair.

I had the same problem, but first try this...there are two pressure activated micro switches on the the hot shoe which tell the camera that an external flash is attached. If one of these switches is stuck, it will not allow the flash to pop up. See if this is the problem, and if so, take a toothbrush or something similar and see if it frees up the switch. Didn't work for me, but I've heard that it worked for some people, just thought I'd pass the tip along.

You know, I did not know that the pop-up flash on the A2 was supposed to pop up like that. I read this message and was fooling around with my camera and it popped up by itself. I always thought you had to push the flash button for it to pop up. This is a good forum!
