Be sure to open the handout.

Busy, I could only get a cover sheet to the handout. It appears that the US Government has some of its dimmer lights working on this project. To wit: "effect" for "affect", "perscription" for "prescription" and "handout's" for "handouts". I guess they're remediating FAA machines during the day and designing websites at night. I hope they at least correct the spelling errors. I'd be embarrassed to hand that out in my neighborhood. Note: In my book, misspellings are OK on this forum, but not on websites or official publications.

"We have to figure out how we can help people organize themselves. There's no way for me or the federal government to manage this problem. What we can do is be a catalyst to help people organize themselves."

May 21, 1998/ Daily Briefing/ John Koskinen--

This linked area is still under development.

Yeah. Apparently about the time most of the fed agencies are "compliant."

The (misspelled) 'poster' thingie is all that's there. No links to any "Community Guide to Y2K." So I called the GSA number listed. They gave me a different page- http://www.y2k.gov. Didn't find any "Community Guide to Y2K" _there_ either. Maybe my visual impairment/brain damage kicking in tho. Feel free to look at the page on your own. Call the number while you're at it (888-USA-4Y2K). It's so cute, how can you resist???

I did tell the 'information specialist' at GSA how bad they screwed up the poster. Must have been at least a GS11 who did that one... .

How about this one? Wow! You think they would let us know this (heavy sarcasm....)

According to the latest reports given to the President's Council on Y2K Conversion by the financial services sector:

Bank accounts will be insured and all major banks are Y2K compliant.

Hmmmm. Washington DC is expected to slammed by tremedous utility and basic services being lost, requiring now 63 some-odd millions of dollars to repair (But they aren't starting late, are they?)

So look at the topics and "leader" of the invitation to come to their briefing:

< Featuring

John Koskinen, assistant to the President of the United States and chair of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion

Margaret Wheatley, organizational consultant, systems expert and author of Leadership and the New Science and A Simpler Way>>

I'm so glad they got a good technically qualified power and utilities representative. I'm sure there's "a simpler way" to dispose of the city's sewage than what they're using now. Course, with no water pressure, we know they won't be flushing toilets for long, will they? With no power, and no water, and no heat - possibly for several days, if not longer- will they have fire problems when candles and lanterns get tipped over in a croded apartment house?

(I can see it now - Koskinen's "Awareness Flyer" distributed as a stuffer with tax refunds and IRS audit notices):

Dear Citizen,

Your Federal Government wants you to know how to react to the so-called Year 2000 computer problem. Further, we want you to know that we understand the problem better than you ever possibly could, and that your Federal Government's assessment of the problem should be the final word. With that in mind:

1. Don't panic 2. Don't remove your money from the bank 3. If in doubt, refer to number 1, above 4. Believe what we tell you 5. Do not be taken in by the harbinger's of doom. 6. Your over reaction could trigger significant problems, and such an over reaction will not be tolerated.

Further communication will be forthcoming as needed. That is all.

Sincerely,

The President's Council on Y2k

Hey! If the "nothing can fly" rule applies to bullets in y2k, then D.C. may actually be a safe place to walk the streets.

Gee, I was able to download the PDF Community Guide to Y2K handout at:

http://www.itpolicy.gsa.gov/mks/yr2000/community/ download/handout.pdf

It's one page. Basically blank.

Says a lot about our dot gov ability to keep tabs on the pulse of Y2K.

re. spelling on your site where you offer the handouts 'Handouts," not "handout's." The former is plural. The latter is possessive, remember? As in "The handout's spelling needs work."

-- Shivani (odnsmall@aol.com), March 05, 1999.

Diane, doesn't that handout look more like a poster to you? Are they only going to release this thing on the web, and tell folks to go to the library?

I was struck by admission of the possibility of serious problems.

Hmmm.
