New Canon CMOS EOS 300 to new CMOS Elan *III* E?

There was an announcement yesterday, 18 Feb 99, in eos-magazine.com, of the new EOS 300.

-A major feature is the new CMOS autofocus sensor (ala EOS 3)

-SEVEN focusing points: five laid horizontally, with one above and one below the centre point

-The AF speed is similar to that of the EOS 50E

-35 metering zones (6 on EOS 500N)

-Shooting speed of 1.5fps (1fps on 500N)

-Film loading prewind time of 7.5 seconds (9 seconds on 500N)

-Midroll rewind has its own dedicated button

-Depth-of-field button

Conspicuously absent for advanced amateurs like myself is Mirror Pre- fire and other goodies available with the CMOS. Hence, I am lead to pose my question.

The new EOS 300 is essentially a new generation EOS 500N / Rebel G. Could there be new generation EOS 50E / Elan IIE in the works?!!!

Be still my beating heart.

NEWS FLASH!!!! There's a new version of everything in the works!!!!

However, if the only thing standing between you and world beating images is a higher technology camera body, you should already be working for National Geographic rather than taking time out from your shooting schedule to ponder the advantages of a CMOS AF sensor.

With all due respect, Mr. Atkins, at least you did not delete my question here. It might have some merit, afterall. Thank you.

I am also interested in hearing from others who may be considering an extra camera body but can't afford the EOS 3 at the moment or hesitate to purchase the eventually-will-be-updated EOS 50E. .....National Geographic?

The next EOS body to get "upgraded" will be the A2 (unless Canon keep playing in the low end Rebel market with a new model or 2 every 6 months). You're safe with an ElanII for a while and.......even when the upgrade eventually appears......your old ElanII will be just as good as it was before the new model was announced! It will be cheaper than the new model and you will have had a couple of years use out of it. A bargin indeed. Mine takes excellent pictures when I point it in the right direction and push the shutter at the correct moment.

I've found the web site of the French magazine Chasseur d'Images to be a very good source of "scoops" on new equipment. Their web address is http://www.chassimage.com/ which sometimes does and sometimes does not work in Netscape, my browser of choice. Enter the full address; spell carefully; and if it does not work the first time, keep trying.

Once you reach it, click on "Les Infos". You will need to read in French, and to put up with their self-congratulatory tone ... but (with apologies to Winston Churchill) they have a good deal to be self-congratulatory about. In particular, they posted information on the Canon Eos 300 ten days before you saw it in eos-magazine.com.

They also had information on a Canon Eos 3000, a replacement for a camera distributed in Europe as the Canon Eos 5000, in Asia as the Canon Eos 888, but not sold in the United States. Both the 5000/888 now and the 3000 of the near future are bottom of the line models, less capable than the Rebel G. For instance, the future 3000 will not have a CMOS detector, but will stay with the classic 3 autofocus points.

The magazine web site also reports on a rumored Hexar that will accept Leica screw-mount lenses, ... but I digress.
