Community Gardens

In my new community, we are organizing a cooperative "y2k Garden". Are any of you involved in gardening on a community level? Interested in comments, experiences...

Who has the duty to stand watch so your veggies aren't pilfered? This is a serious question that needs to be answered. There's a cemetery in our county whose gates are locked at night. Is it to keep the vandals out or the occupants from leaving?

In addition to the guard, I would suggest written agreement on rights and obligations regarding work and crop shares. Community, in times of want, will require clarity about this, otherwise squabbling and division is likely to occur.

We have a lot of P-Patches in Seattle and environs, so your question prompted me to go looking for information of use. Try http://ag.arizona.edu/hypermail/community_garden/0085.html for an overview of things to think of in making a community garden.

Karen, thank you. Good site. I wonder about the security issue, also. The site's contribution on security was probably not in light of y2k, bbut interesting, nonetheless:

"* Plant a "vandal's garden" at the entrance. Mark it with a sign: "If you must take food, please take it from here.'"

Wonder how that might play during y2k...

If the garden becomes really valuable to all, and vandalism is a concern, then why not institute a watch?
