The EOS3 manual suggests the metering mode be set to SPOT metering while performing FEL (flash exposure lock)using the 550EX flash. I would like to know if FEL will work in other metering modes, such as EVALUATIVE and CENTER WEIGHTED. I am presume the answer would have to be 'yes' since the 550EX flash reads the light coming from the ACTIVE focusing point during 'P' (program) mode.

Answers

You would be defeating much of the advantage of FEL by using anything other than spot metering. The general idea is to spot meter the preflash and then recompose.
