This is a very large topic. You will find some information in, for example, A History of Photography, under "Signigicant processes", then "film".

One of the primary reasons for the development of the "camera obscura", a good topic to begin with, was to enable Renaissance era artists to accurately outline their subjects onto a canvas set up inside the camera obscura itself. Also, remember that people are visual by our nature and the desire to recreate an event or view may be one of mankind's primal needs. In evidence I offer the importance of the bards, storytellers, medicine men, etc. primitive society sets upon these individuals that can effectively recreate an event orally. Good luck with your project and remember to think about the sum total of your research and not simply the facts you've collected. Be a bard. ( The camera obscura is arguably the forerunner of the modern camera.)
