It's tough to cram enough digital info into a vertical shot, but since we can't turn our monitors on end, here goes. Taken in the rain with Fuji GS645, Tmax100, aprox. 4 seconds.

I like the subject and the composition. I'd like to see more detail in the forest but this digital version is a bit too dark. This looks like a shot I took at Amicalolas Fall in North Georgia. I took black and white and color. I liked the color better because Velvia really brought out those shady greens. Did you try color at this lovely location?

That one tree! It upsets the separation of the upper collection of verticals from the lower accumulation of blocks which is nicely balanced and gives the great emphasis to the texture contrast. I would have mentally bemoaned the existance of the windfall and probably have skipped the shot because of it, so what did you intend? Does the disruption of the image's serenity acomplish your visual goal?

Larry, it was such a dreary day that It was easy for me to see this in BW. Frank, I wasn't too concerned about the fallen tree, and in fact saw it as an element of the design; but your point is well taken.

It does appear darker and more contrasty at this size; The darkness translates as "richness" at the 11x14 size, but I'm now thinking that a little flatter scan might be in order for web viewing. Thanks

I find myself asking "what is the subject?".

Hi Mike,

First let me say that overall, I really enjoy this shot. It is engaging and reminds me of places I like to go. I like how the stream meanders through the woods. The feeling I get is that I am looking downstream, but I can't really tell. The good thing is that I don't care. The image would work if you told me I am looking upstream. Lastly, I think the deadfall belongs in the image, but I'm not so sure it is in the "right" place within the composition. I don't have any recommendations as to where it would work. I'll bet your large print does do this image justice...just some thoughts.

Regards, Jim

Mike, I like this a lot! I love the vertical trees in the background. The little bit of light behind them makes them stand out nicely. Also like the light on the "leafy" tree in the upper right. The slow exposure does nice things for the water. Nice, rich tones too throughout the print. At first I wasn't sure about the deadfall, but the more I look at this the more it doesn't bother me.
