The Top 15...head-to-head

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

OK, this one's gonna be lengthy because I'm not quite sure how to format it for this board, but here it goes anyway.

What is it? Just like the subject line suggests, it is the record of the top 15 leaderboard players against each other as of February 4. The listing gives a win to a player who outscores another player on the same game (ties do not count). This gives you an interesting insight. The following is a breakdown of each of the top 15 players with their won-lost record against each of the other top 15 players.

What does it show? It shows that I'm the MARP whipping boy with a total of 474 encounters with the other top 15. Next closest is JSW with 318 and then most of the others are in the 150-250 range...hmmm, I think I need a better insurance policy if I'm gonna get my ass kicked so often! :p

Have I confused you enough? I've confused myself quite a bit in trying to explain this bit of over-the-top, too-many-stats, don't-I-have-anything-better-to-do approach to our leaderboard...Enjoy...I think. ;)

Very interesting question, JoustGod! I don't think it is a good idea about Top 15 head-to-head leaderboard stats! MAME support over 1000 games and most of us (MARP players) don't even try to compete each other over one game than playing other games which we do best on!:)

I have been on this MARP page about 6-8 months! I just started to submit some the games that I'm good at about a month ago! I didn't think I could make it to top 15 in less a month! I have another suggestion, it may be a bad idea or not! If we can set up MARP first tournament! Like picking the top 10-25 games we like to see compete against each other in 1-2 weeks with TG setting or not! No point leeching, cheating, autofire, and etc... We could have everybody try out, so you can get a better stats whose better leaderboard in tournament/leaderboard! Just my opinion! Feel free to add something!

Where do you find the time.......

I'm too busy enjoying the games to spend calculating this sort of stuff!!! ;-)

But it does make interesting reading.

That was a really good idea NotMan. Lets create a tournament, the participants choose one game each to be in the compo. Then we give everybody a chance in two weeks to rack up the best recording they can do on each game. Then we will have a tournament, with the best tournament players..

A tournement sounds pretty good. For a start, (if it goes through) us marpers can vote on 10 games that we would like to see in the tournement. Then after a week or 2, take the top 10 games with the highest votes and those games would be used. Another thing, I recommend the scoring system according to Twin Galaxies which is explained on the page. Basically, the highest score on a game would be equivilant to 100% and then the next highest score would be equivelant to a lower percentage based on the score, and so on. I figured who ever is in favor of this tourney should comment on it now so Chris can let us know if it's something he would want to do on the marp page.

Actually I've also been thinking for some time now about some mini- tournaments or games of the week/month competitions...

You know, something to brighten up the hum drum oh dear do I really have to play another classic arcade game from the halcyon days of my youth that I'm really unbelievably happy I can play whenever I want without having to drive hours to find a small outlet that still has this particular game in working order.

But seriously, even though I'm enjoying playing Mame with just the occasional mini battle over some games I think it would add to the enjoyment to have regular mini tournaments of this nature.

Having votes over which games should be played sounds like a good way to get the first tournament started, with perhaps Zwaxy choosing a couple of obscure titles at random just to add some extra interest. Of course he's probably going to choose obscure titles he just happens to like to improve his chances !!! ;-)

I think a tournament page separate from the usual recording pages would be good with perhaps some automated copying over to the main pages if someone betters the existing high score - using TG or equivalent to current recording settings naturally.

Thats me $0.02.

BeeJay.

PS: Zwaxy - hows about an automated voting booth for choosing the tournament games !!! :-)

PS: I forgot to mention the idea of first placed score being worth 100% and all other scores their effective percentage of 1st place is one of the better methods to ensure a high score on a particular game that is significantly better than the other scores on that game gets the kudos it deserves so I'd be happy to go with that option.
