Oh great - all this W-2 info is electronically transferred to the IRS - who are now officially "overdue" on the previously publicized Y2K compliance date of Jan 31, 1999.

So that means nobody is reading the records - in case there are flaws electronically. Sp when people have to check the "manual" backup method - by reading the W-2 itself - they will START the backup method using the wrong info.

Mildly amusing story, I guess. But this doesn't appear to be Y2K- related.

This is a longer version of the report that I referred to las t week in a post(Am I the Only one that saw this?). They have changed W-2 forms many times over the years. Why does this happen THIS year? Software companies update their tax preperation software every year and consumers buy those upgrades every year. Why did so many of those consumers (companies) not buy the upgrade this year? Why is it mainly governmental organizations? hmmmmmm But there's nothing wrong. We're nuts!!!!!!

Re IRS:

Most of you owe no income tax at all

If you don't pay, you will have a 40% (whatever) raise to prepare for Y2K. (Who is going to put that money to better use, you or the federales?)

Don't confuse being marked dead on the printed W-2 and being marked dead on the data file transmitted to IRS. It's not too hard to screw up the print job and not realize it until you've printed a couple hundred W-2's. You don't generally re-run a print job if the spacing's off a little. Even W-2's.

BTW - I'm happily dead on my printed W-2 but the data file to IRS was fine.

Michael,

Your link has changed today. Best to post the whole story if it's "breaking news" or a short-lived newsmedia link.
