JUST AN F.Y.I.- Regarding the book titled: 'Where There is No Doctor' by David Werner. Tried finding the book through Amazon.com, but availability was: This title usually ships within 4-6 weeks. Please note that titles occasionally go out of print or publishers run out of stock. We will notify you within 2-3 weeks if we have trouble obtaining this title. HOWEVER, I just recently received the book via mail from a company called: HealthWrights, 964 Hamilton Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94301. Web page: www.healthwrights@igc.org. (650-325-7500-phone) (650-325-1080-FAX). Ordered it on Jan 20th...received it today 2/2. Must less of a wait than the 4-6 weeks from Amazon.com.

I didn't have any trouble ordering "Where There Is No Doctor" from Amazon, but they couldn't get me a copy of "Where There Is No Dentist." I did an online search and ordered it from Jade Mountain (www.jademountain.com). They delivered my copy of "Where There Is No Dentist" to me in less than a week.

Are the two aforementioned books really helpful? What are people using for a good general first aid/health reference?

Sylvia,

Two of the best home medical/first aid manuals are The Merck Manual of Medial Information-Home Edition and the Mayo Clinic Manual.

The Merck Manual online

The Mayo Clinic Manual at Amazon

Hope this helps

The "Where there is no..." books are indeed helpful, but please please please make time for at least a Red Cross first aid course, or the basic EMT course if you can swing it. Someone in your extended family/group needs to have some class time and some hands- on experience. The idea of someone standing over me to do diagnosis and treatment with a how-to book in hand gives me severe willies.

Had the EMT/Ambulance course, worked as a volunteer for six years before HIV came along, no longer want to get bled on by strangers especially for free... .
