Athens to Macon Route

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Central of Georgia Railway Historical Soc : One Thread

I was wondering if anyone had any information about the current status of the Madison to Watkinsville line. I live along this route and am interested in it. I wrote a real estate agent for NS and he said it was abandoned...just not operational. I was wondering if anyone knew about any plans for it? Does anyone know any history? All I know is that is was finished around 1889. I've always though that the Lula-Macon route could be a serious shortline, line-haul route around Atlanta as traffic gets heavier. Anyway, thanks for any info.

Matt, I have particular interest in that line myself and have done considerable research through the years concerning it. It was first operated as the Covington and Macon Railroad, then became the Macon & Northern Railroad before being taken over by the Central of Georgia in late 1800's. I have several relatives who worked as station agents along that line, particularly at Whitehall, Watkinsville, Bishop, Farmington, Apalachee, and Madison during the 1940's through 1960's. Please reply to me via direct e-mail regarding what specific information you might want. Jim Goolsby
