Volcanic Eruptions

greenspun.com : LUSENET : About Hawaii : One Thread

Hi, I was wondering if the people in Hawaii take precautions with regard to volcanic eruptions and if so, what kinds of precautions or things do they do to prepare for such things? Thank you.

Lava on the surface usually travels 1-300 yards per hour, but sometimes moves 8-10 miles an hour. Underground tunnels could have lava moving 50+ miles per hour. Between July 1986 and January 1992, the town of Kalapana and a majority of the 181 homes lost were destroyed. No lives were lost because the flow is so slow. Most people had time to move most of their belongings out.
