For human consumption, oats are "rolled" to remove the hull and make them usable. Once rolled, oats can be ground into oatmeal or eaten as rolled oats. Whole oats are for animal feed, people with rollers and deparate people a year from now who are going to dicover that making food is hard work.

for small amounts, try the old indian method of getting wild oats and other tight-hulled type grains. Take a couple of handfulls at a time and parch them in a pan. The indians would put it into a basket, and then place a red hot stone in the basket and, constantly stirring the grains, parch them. I think it probably would work by parching it in a pan, too, like roasting coffee beans. Try it and see.

contact Abundant Life Seed Foundation; they sell oats, spelt, etc., and have screens for separating seeds from their husks, and information on processing grains.
