y2k wake up call

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Local news story (WJLA--DC ABC affiliate) just likened last week's ice storm (which caused power outages) to what will happen come y2k. Called the ice storm a y2k wake up call. Urged people to compile a y2k disaster kit (which would include food, water, extra clothing, propane stove, candles, etc.)! Interviewed Rep. Constance Morella (R-MD) and regular people on the street who all said this had got them thinking about what it would be like next year. Also had "y2k expert" on (whose name, unfortunately, escapes me) who said disruptions could last a long time.

Wasn't a nay-sayer among them except the news anchor said after the story was done that he was planning a big trip around the holidays next December and that half of the people wouldn't go because of y2k. He commented that there sure was a lot of paranoia out there. Seems that some people DGI even when it's right in their face!

In spite of the news anchor -- who seemed too threatened to be able to deal -- it was the best and most serious local coverage I've seen yet. Also -- there is a local y2k meeting at a Jr. HIgh School in our neighborhood next Saturday. Will be interesting to see what happens!

Awareness if growing and we still can't find any lamp oil...

Hi Libby,

Wow! JLA telling the truth? almost enough to make me hook up the television again...well, maybe not quite. My current measure of the y2k (lack of) awareness here in the DC metro area is what I get from talking to the guys at the VA medical center when I go in for phys. therapy twice each week...have to see what they're sayin' monday...

interesting, Arlin

Guess now is the time to start working with the wider community! I'm just relieved to have more people come to their senses. Even if it does mean that it's hard to find lamp oil.... There was a DCY2K meeting this week sponsored by Fannie Mae. Didn't get to go, but have a friend who did. Will find out tomorrow what went on. The meeting was to talk about the utilities. Anyone from DC go to it or hear about it? Keep preparing.
