Nuclear Detonation Detected In Iran

WASHINGTON (Jan. 17) -- Satellites have detected numerous signs of a major impact located in the hills of northwestern Iran. "We are pretty sure that this was an intended nuclear explosion" Jody Birmingham said, a spokeswoman for the Department of Enhanced Satellite Technology. When questioned by the press, The White House had no comment, nor did The Pentagon. Iranian officials have declined to speak with The Associated Press. So far, human casualties or structural damage is unknown. More information will be supplied when further information is available.

This isn't an AP story -- I used to work for them, I know the style. This thing would never have gotten on the wire in the form shown here. And Francesca spells his name without the H. Also, no URL, and there's nothing on the AP international or breaking news or national wires about this.

Searched all APs for today and yesterday and nothing about a nuclear explosion was reported. Just another false report.

At this point in time, I don't believe this story completely and I don't completely discount it either. Remember the stories of the suspected nuclear explosion off the coast of South Africa back in the eighties? Lots of fingers pointed at a Israeli-South African military arms development agreement. The question was never really answered.

These days there have been lots of fingers pointed at Iran and Russia over possible nuclear arms sales. If you were a government that just paid big bucks for some suitcase nukes, you'd test one to make certain you didn't get ripped-off, wouldn't you? This might be another one of those cases.

This is a story to keep ears open for over the next month or so. It took the "mystery blast in the South Atlantic" story about six weeks to get wide expousure. There might be a similar cycle about this one too.

WW-- Re: South Africa. The detonation in the 80's was detected by satellite and the media got snippets of information (just in case the South African government announced it publically afterward) to show the U.S. was aware and not caught napping. South Africa didn't report it, but everyone in the intelligence community knew that the test ocurred. The former President of the South Africa, de Klerk, has confirmed that South Africa did indeed detonate a device and had further development programs underway. He claims that the program was stopped by his direction.
