National Guard Presents

Gary North is back, with this goodie for our Convince the DGI basket:

National Guard, Y2K, Current Hot Topics

These are PowerPoint presentations.
Gary summarizes their Y2K Impact:

So, what can Americans expect some of the difficulties to be? Well, they range from minor inconveniences to major disruptions -- the problem is not simply confined to personal desktop computers. Programmable alarm clocks and coffee makers may not work, heating and air-conditioning systems may malfunction and some video cassette recorders may not work. Even some day-date-type wristwatches may malfunction.

On the serious side, some telecommunications systems may malfunction, possibly impacting emergency 911 operations. Worldwide, transportation systems -- air, land and sea travel -- may be affected. Reservations systems may malfunction, radar and other safety-related systems may be influenced and radio communications may be impacted. Traffic lights may not operate properly and toll gates may malfunction, causing massive traffic backups. Police and fire emergency response might be affected, as well as electronic life-support equipment in ambulances and hospitals.

We may find ourselves unable to access buildings equipped with electronic security systems, or stranded in high-rise buildings when electronically programmed elevators malfunction. Large segments of our nation's electric power grid could fail, causing massive blackouts. Water distribution systems could fail. Distribution of vital petroleum and natural gas could be hampered if electronically controlled pipelines malfunction. Even our financial well-being might be affected if automated payroll systems malfunction, banks close and ATM cards fail to work.

All of these possibilities, and many more, might affect our lives for months, if not years, into the 21st century. The "Millennium Bug" is a global problem of immense dimension.

STATE MISSION: Governors' first line of defense will continue to be be ready and prepared.

FEDERAL MISSION: The National Guard, as an integral element of the TOTAL FORCE, will continue to be prepared to meet any contingency.

This is not the only amazing thing to come out in the last week.
Just talked to about 20 people responsible for Emergency Preparedness in one capacity or another in our locality. The government is planning a massive push for responsible preparedness in MARCH. The publicity will shoot thru the roof, and the government will be ready to drill. Naturally there is a deep concern that panic be prevented. Right now, the problem is a proliferation of conflicting information resulting in confusion as to what exactly to expect.

The general public is still groggy on Y2K and has NOT yet awoken to how it may affect them personally. But they will be bombarded with directives SOON.

We on this Forum are incredibly fortunate to have preparation information at our fingertips and these discussions to help us prepare mentally.

Ashton & I have learned an enormous amount this morning. Please, everybody, GET READY *NOW.* Do not delay. The window of calm, abundant opportunity to prepare will not be wide open much longer.

I guess this calls for another counter:

47 days

'til the rice runs out.

You've convinced me. I'll be done by then. Why March? Why not today?

-- Lisa (lisab@shallc.com), January 08, 1999.

Lisa, they can't today because they're still assessing loads of contradictory incoming information and they're still getting organized and prepared themselves. But the pooh-poohing is over.

Fascinating stuff, Leska. When you say "The government is planning a massive push for responsible preparedness in MARCH." do you mean your local government? or the Feds?

Obviously, Lisa, this is just a guess, since I have absolutely no idea:

"They" wanna wait til it starts getting warmer before "they" start the panic?

-- pshannon (pshannon@inch.com), January 08, 1999.

P & Leska, this is a big big deal if the Feds want this start-date, as opposed to local.

If they promote preparedness, they're obliged to say for HOW LONG. If they say 1 month, no big deal. If they say 6 months, get the hell out of the stock market and get that dental work done NOW.

Hey, Leska, this is the conclusion I've been waiting for and dreading. Best tip/indicator yet. Thank you, ma'am.

P: Escape from New York. Escape[date] LE days(sysdate + 50).

pshannon, the pressure is coming from the top, bottom, and middle. The bureaucrats are cutting red tape and moving on this.

The people we talked to are intelligent, straightforward, responsible citizens in their communities. Some have decades-long track records overseeing and *doing* the set-up/maintenance/repair work to keep the carrying systems going.

We did not hear one iota of bullsh** or spin today. No turf wars, power grabs, or ulterior motives. We heard only honest, energized updates on how leaders -- local, state, regional, federal -- are seriously grappling with mandates to plan, prepare, organize, remediate, etc. Of course, we purposely only contacted ppl we knew were decent. But these same people have drastically changed their mocking tune from 4 months ago!

When people really understand their security is in danger, they can move FAST to attempt to head off disaster. We feel both encouraged and re-zapped into tying up all loose ends. There was absolutely no evidence *anybody* in responsible positions wants panic! Very much the opposite direction of brainstorming all possible ways to keep order and yet help everybody be very ably self-sufficient.

Their approach, being considered now (subject to change as the winds shift), is:
Prepare To The Best Of Your Ability

When you and your family are well prepared, reach out to your co-workers and neighborhood.

"They" have no more idea how long disruptions will last than we do! They are racking their expertise trying to imagine any/all scenarios and figure out how to compensate for problems. BUT -- there isn't enough time left to cover everything!

Read again above what the National Guard's first announcement says:
"All of these possibilities, and many more, might affect our lives for months, if not years, into the 21st century. The "Millennium Bug" is a global problem of immense dimension."

This is just the first public baby-step, training wheel intro for JQP to start thinking SELF-RELIANCE.

Thanks for your concern, Lisa, and I will escape from New York. Going to a small town with the rest of the family. But I'll wait til the last minute. Morbid curiosity, I suppose. I wanna be here when it starts to collapse. Kind of like watching Rome burn. I've got my bug out bag, and I'll WALK if I have to...

-- pshannon (pshannon@inch.com), January 08, 1999.

pshannon,

Don't cut it too short! Someone said here that there are only two times to "bug out": Too Early and Too Late! Ten cuidado, amigo.

Leska:

Your post made my heart swell with pride at the possibility that our government and leaders are on the ball. I get sad and angry at the thought that political greed may kill thousands, if not millions of us. I hope with all of my heart that there will be government activity by March of this year. There would still be time to set up emergency measures and life saving procedures, despite the clown who is our president. I want to believe that there are many people in different levels of government that still believe their sworn oaths. Your post has been the most positive one I have read in many months. I pray that it is true. could you possibly divulge, if not the names of the people you contacted, but at least their positions and titles?
