Answers

No, but if I were you I'd probably have someone check your engine. (Duh)

How many miles do you have on your car Amy?

If you aren't smart enough to handle this on your own, you aren't smart enough to be driving. Quit wasting forum space with this silly drivel. This USED to be a good forum, now it's getting full of B.S. Now go play on the Gary North is a Big Fat Idiot Forum.

This may indicate that your vehicle needs to be checked. The smog controle needs to be serviced after x-number of miles. It may be the O2 censor.

If the check engine light, also known as a MIL, Malfunction Indicator Lamp, comes on intermittently it may not be a big deal. As mentioned above, it may be bogus readings from the O2 sensor(if the EPA has their way I'm sure it will eventually be a censor!) which is part of your emissions control system. If the light comes on and STAYS on, you should have it checked out. On Board Diagnostic 3, or OBD-III, systems will gradually erode your vehicle's performance forcing you to take it to a mechanic for servicing if the MIL stays lit. OBD-II does not force the issue this way but a persistent MIL should still be checked out. I'm not sure what OBD a '94 Mazda has, could be either one for all I know. My late '80's Ford has had an occasional MIL flicker for years with no impact to driveablility or emissions. I doubt very much that this is Y2K related but I suppose one never knows.

I'm sorry I confused the newbies by leaving out the subtext.

SUBTEXT:

1. Embedded chips, such as those found in cars, may have Year 2000 problems. 2. Year 2000 problems may start earlier than the Year 2000, depending on internal logic that only the creator understands. 3.

3. I hit submit too soon. 4. Any problems occurring near trigger dates, such as Jan 1, 1999, are suspect.

I hope that clears it up for you.

You didn't confuse this "person", but the answer still stands. Think about it...with the number of vehicles on the road how many "check engine" lights probably came on after 1/1/99? Not because of Y2K, but because of a real problem with the engine. You're paranoid, along with 90 percent of the others in this forum.

Amy, I also have a Mazda MVP 4wheel van and my light also came on, but according to my husband, it comes on when you reach 80,000 miles. It is standard in Mazda's. Did you recently turn 80,000 miles?
