Mark I'm not sure what to say about this image. The lighting is unusual in that I can't tell from which direction it comes; almost feel like I'm looking at the image upside down. There is a soft feel to the light. I'll take your word for it that there is detail in the shadows, I just wish there was more depth in the shot. If it's about patterns, that's ok too, it just doesnt grab me like your foam and rocks image of last week. Regards.

Yes, the upside-down lighting definitely makes this an unusual image. The very soft contrast seems to take away some of the hardness I expect from rocks, I can't think of any images of rocks done so softly, almost soft-focus. If this was one of mine, I'd have to hang this one on my wall for while to tell if I liked the soft effect or not.

I love rocks, I look at them all the time, even when I'm not photographing them. This image, however, doesn't get much reaction from me, I think there may be too many intersecting lines, or maybe not enough. Too many for a strong graphic pattern to emerge, but not enough to constitute and overall pattern for my taste. When I use my cropping aid to view about 1/4 to 1/2 of the image area I see several very nice bold graphics of a few intersecting crevices and water stains - the dark area in the upper right to about the bottom of the "VEE" and the upper left with only 2 or 3 pairs of major intersections pop out at me.
