This is an interesting image....the reflections of the light in the water in the upper half of the frame almost seem alien because of the lack of structure in the reflections....it really makes you want to peer into that area and figure out what you're looking at. (I don't see any foam in the shot, it looks more to me like an oil slick)

However, the lower 1/3rd is just too dark in the shadow area for me...it just doesn't seem to fit with the upper 2/3. Have you tried different croppings? Also, how about some technical info?

Overall, a good shot...and welcome to the page- keep shooting!!

sorry that I forgot to add technical info, tmax 100 @asa 50 dev in hc 110 print---gallerie #2 toned in selenium. 360mm lens/4x5

different crops just don't work for me, the shadows are more detailed in the actual print, and I probably will selenium intensify the negative to bring those tonalities up some more.

and yes, it is foam, trust me.

Sure looks like foam to me!

As to the composition, I find it a bit busy, but with interesting contrasts of elements - jagged vs. curved. I suspect that I would have tried to make the foreground rocks somewhat more of a diagonal than nearly vertical, if I were doing the shot. The dark foregound doesn't bother me as it is not featureless black, but a little of it goes a long way and, in this case, less would be better, for me (I did some visual cropping with an empty 35mm slide mount and I like having less of the bottom shadow better).

I feel that the over simplification of this image would ruin it ( there are many steps beyond the rule of thirds) also, to crop the bottom would drastically change the mood and effect of the image, and as I said before, the shadows do have full detail.

You've captured some beautiful patterns in the water and the composition is an interesting balance; the rock in the upper r. hand corner is absolutely essential, preventing a top/bottom breakup. The bottom 1/4 is full black on my monitor. I suspect your monitor might be turned up brighter than mine.
