Mounties Year 2000 Troubleshooter Preaches Preparations (James Stevenson,Vancouver Sun)

The Y2K head at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (the "Mounties"), Dave Morreau, told journalists Tuesday that citizens "should squirrel away a little food, water and cash." The Mounties are trying to walk a fine line between warning people about the dangers Y2K poses and inciting panic; they don't claim to know what will happen in 2000. Their assessment of the problem is due to be finished by spring, and in the meantime Morreau is "touring detachments and talking to officers." Regarding the official preparations (that we've read about) taken by the Canadian government, "Morreau said it canmt hurt to be prepared for slight disruptions in services." Morreau recommends having a couple weeks' worth of food and cash, and perhaps a month's worth of water, "but we don't know if a month's supply is too much or not enough." He recommends against having thousands of dollars of cash under the mattress, for fear of burglars dropping by and helping themselves to it. The article concludes with Morreau saying that Canada's doing extremely well compared to other countries, and that Y2K worries don't make him to lose any sleep.
