Community Prep: What works when contacting Emergency Management Services?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Millennium Salons : One Thread
This posting reflects a series of four messages to the Y2K Water List that picks up with Dave Hunter's comment regarding his contact with Emergency Management Services in his state:
From : Dave Hunter

The previous post was very useful to me. Contacting the State Emergency Management people is coming up real soon. I've already made some importanct contacts but more is hopefully forthcoming. After sitting thru a presentation of what they are directed to do, I think they are major players. What they would do in the Y2K situations is probably not much different than any other disaster, but the "where" of it, and the scope of handling the problems throughout a state simultaneously, whiile the rest of the nation and the rest of the world is trying also to cope with the same problem. Gonna take a lot of planning.
Dave Jones replied:
After several phone calls, (with very good reception), I was able to meet with the Director of Emergency Management in our city. He was very thankful for the Y2k information that I was able to provide.
I used only the most reliable information that I could get.
I was very thankful that the reception went so well and I would encourage all to make the necessary contacts as soon as possible.
Y2k Issue is very important to the cities for preparation and planning.
The Office of Emergency Management becomes the top prioritizer in time of City, County, or Statewide crisis.
Dave Jones was asked:
What information did you use? Could you give us a list?
Dave Jones replied:
I used the basic information from the GAO:
Year 2000 Computing Crisis: An Assessment Guide
GAO/AIMD-10.1.14, September 1997. (pdf file)
Year 2000 Computing Crisis: Business Continuity and Contingency Planning
GAO/AIMD-10.1.19 Exposure Draft, March 1998. (pdf file)
All available GAO Y2K reports (including the above) can be found at:
I also included information from Sen. Bennett's Office:
BENNETT CALLS FOR ACTION ON YEAR 2000 COMPUTER PROBLEM.
U.S. Senate Creates Committee on Year 2000 Technology Problem - Bennett to Serve as Chairman.
COUNTDOWN TO THE YEAR 2000
Dodd Named Vice-Chair of Special Committee on Year 2000 Computer Crisis.
HORN FLUNKS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON YEAR 2000 FIX
One can choose any or all of these, or anything else that you believe to be both relevent and credible.
I preferred to start with the US Gov. Agencies and work from there.
The Transcripts are available from CSIS on the "Year 2000 Computing Crisis", this will be useful as well.
