And this kind of serves as an example of what Infomagic has said -- that there is no way to escape the "residual" bugs that occur as a result of "fixing" the Y2K problem. And, specifically, that if every single computer were "fixed" for Y2K, this "residual" problem alone will be enough to bring everything down.

Did some updates on a COBOL payroll printing program once. Boss took it and ran it to test. Forgot to remove test from print queue. Payroll runs program for payroll. Operator comes in and prints checks. Next morning we had an extra half million or so in checks - had to take them out of circulation and contact the bank and a whole bunch of other stuff. Would have been simpler to split the money and buy a ranch in Argentina.
