Y2K Themes on TV Shows

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This was received tonight. I don't watch much TV so don't know anything about this info. Just passing it along to folks who are TV suavy.

NEWS FLASH: The award winning lawyer tv series, The Practice will be introducing a Y2K theme for its next few episodes. If successful, this theme may be expanded for the rest of the year.

The first episode features a defendant caught attempting to bomb his previous place of employment. He had been recently fired because he had leaked to the press how his superiors were falsifying reports about the firms Y2K compliance. The powerful company had put a legal gag order on the employee, because his top security computer work was proprietary. The defendant claims that his only option was to attract attention to the deception by a significant act that would be visible to everyone. As the thread develops, information about Y2K is woven through the dialog. This case will carry through four weeks of The Practice.

A second theme, under development, involves members of an urban commune in the city who were preparing for Y2K by using gray water, raising goats and chickens, and other actions in violation of city codes. The legal case against them was for using sophisticated pepper spray against authorities who came to remove their goats and chickens. Other legal tv programs are considering developing Y2K themes.

Joe, that is very interesting, thanks for sharing it with us. Lawyer shows! But even TV land is coming late to the theme. Better than not at all. If awareness increases as projected, the storylines will seems antiquated by their final episodes.

Joe, it would be great if somebody on here would post, ahead of time, all TV, radio, & movie shows that incorporate Y2K. Then we could get a multimedia portfolio to present to family DGIs. Would you like to start a continual Y2K Upcoming Media thread?

Joe, this is interesting.

However, my dear husband came up with an intriguing theory....

Remember "War of the Worlds"?

Well, he says, what if Y2k gets to be such a topic in sitcoms, tv shows, etc; that the general public percieves Y2k awareness as "did you see the show last night?", and "that isn't real, it's just a show!". Hmmmmm.

He's convinced that's exactly what will happen.

Time will tell.

There was a Year 2000 theme started in Chicago Hope. The nutsy geeky doctor insisted that he be put in charge of the Y2K project since no one else was taking it seriously. I haven't seen the show in a while, but they were definitely taking it down the "this guy is nuts" path. They could easily swing it either way from this point forward. In any case, the term "Y2K" was used, some of the problems were brought up, and it is clearly going to be a long-term plot line.

At what time and channel does this show air?

Hmmmm... David Kelley created and produces "Chicago Hope", "The Practice", and "Ally McBeal". I'd say he or one of his senior wroters have discovered a wealth of possibilities in the Y2K theme. No matter - it does keep the topic in front of folks. Have to wonder if we'll soon see a plotline on "Ally" involving John Cage making preparations or perhaps a new love interest of Ally's who's buying and stocking up a "vacation home" in some rural area. Stay tuned.
