NTFS Allocation Unit Size

greenspun.com : LUSENET : SQL Server Database Administration : One Thread

Hello, I am installing a large RAID Array, 100GB, to be used only by MS SQL Server. I am making the block size 64k when I setup the array through the array controller. What should the allocation unit size be when I format the array in NTS?

I have not been able to find much in the way of white papers to backup configuration decisions, Does any body know of a good source on this topic?

Re: NTFS Allocation Unit Size

The best size is 4 KB for performance reasons.

If you planned to have many small files and no performance desire at all, you might consider smaller allocation units. However, since SQL Server deals in large files you can dismiss this approach.
