Somebody mentioned watching resignations as a possible Y2K barometer.

Maybe this thread can be a place to post resignations which may lead clues in various sectors.

Place Resigns From Bank of America

CHARLOTTE (AP) - Janey Place, one of Bank of America's most senior women executives, has resigned.

Place, 52, was the former head of NationsBank's 100-person strategic technology group and once tutored Hugh McColl Jr. on using a personal computer. Her resignation comes two months after the Sept. 30 merger of BankAmerica Corp. and NationsBank.

The bank did not say why she resigned.

Her resignation comes amid questioning about the bank's commitment to promoting women. The criticism caused McColl, chairman of Bank of America, to send to letter to employees stressing that the bank is ``an inclusive meritocracy.''

Several women have climbed to the top at NationsBank.

McColl's letter followed an article by The San Francisco Chronicle that said since the since the Sept. 30 merger of San Francisco-based BankAmerica and Charlotte's NationsBank, all of the former BankAmerica's top 10 women executives have left or seen their authority shrink in the merger's wake.

The Top Dog at General Electric resigned this week.

-- Anti-chainsaw (Tree@hugger.com), December 09, 1998.

Bob Crandall retired from AMR (American Airlines) in May.

By the way, one reason SABRE is taking over USAir's system is because USAir could not make themselves Y2K in time.

Think there might be a few more of these "mergers" or "outsourcing" deals in 1999? Companies who DGI taken over by ones who GI a few years back.

Look for mergers, and buyouts in the electricity/gas utility industry. There's too much liability and the profit margins are shrinking. Deregulation will become regulated again.

The top dog at Capital One resigned today to pursue other interests. Stock was down about 6% on the news. Capital One is a huge credit card conglomerate.

Well, lotsa resignations since this thread was last activated, but here's something to note up on AP Breaking News:

Compaq Resignations

[ For Educational Purposes Only ]

4/18/99 -- 4:25 PM

HOUSTON (AP) - Without notice and with little explanation, Compaq Computer Corp. president and CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer resigned Sunday along with the company's chief financial officer.

The company's board formed an interim chief executive's office to handle day-to-day operations of the world's largest supplier of computer systems.

Also resigning Sunday was Earl Mason, Compaq's chief financial officer. Compaq treasurer Ben Wells will take on Mason's duties at least on an interim basis.

The company has been under tremendous pressure from stockholders since it stunned Wall Street on April 9 by announcing its first-quarter earnings would be half of what analysts expected.

Here's one that is interesting - apparently, the chief information officer of the California DMV has resigned. From an article at http://www.ocregister.com/politics/y2k017w.shtml (Orange County, CA)

"The county's biggest snag: fifteen to 20 state agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles and the health and welfare department, most of whom have yet to set dates with the county to test intertwining systems.

"I'm not complaining," said Leo Crawford, chief information officer for the county. "But we need some help from the state to make sure (these agencies) don't slip. If they slip past November, I'm in doo-doo."

"Otherwise, the county is 85 percent ready for Y2K, Crawford said.

"Elias Cortez, the state' chief information officer, praised the county's Y2K plans so far, saying it's in "a leading position" compared with the rest of the state. He pledged to help the county coordinate with state agencies in time for the new year, in which many computers are feared to fail because of the way they process dates.

"A spokesman at the DMV said no officials were available for comment; the department's chief information officer resigned Wednesday, he said."
