Update From Rick

Hi all. Yes I am still alive, as is Grandmother. It has not been a very fun week to put it lightly. Grandmother has been through living hell. It turned out to be some form of advanced pneumonia (they changed the name of what she had so many times I stopped paying attention) and she had compounded it by LYING to us for two weeks. Yes folks, even 78 year old Grandmother's are capable of lying;) Anyway, she left the hospital today for a week at the rehab center trying to get some strength back in her. She will then be coming home and has been told she is pretty much not to leave her house until Spring due to lung damage. She is a VERY active woman, so this is going to be tough to tie her down.

The best part of this though, they got her started on Nicotine patches and she is promising to kick her 60 year old smoking habit! YAY! The doctors were amazed how healthy her lungs were, even with pneumonia, considering how long she had been smoking. So things are looking up, but we do have a long road of retraining her to "behave"

I do want to tell you all that I did read every well wish that was sent and they really did help perk up things quite a bit. I printed them all out and took them to her to read and she was very touched that people whom she had never met (and she had heard about Herring's and my debate on older people on here) were so concerned for her. So thank you all VERY much, the notes really did help to perk her up.

I probably wills till be scarce for awhile as I am doing a lot more of the housework around here to alleviate some of the strain off the rest of the family. I have been able to work in some Y2K prep though, so I didn't lose all my time at least on that;) AND was able to write some articles too, so has been an incrdibally busy week.

Again, I can't not thank you all enough!

Rick,

Welcome back! When you can spare the time, make sure you logon here. I always did appreciate your objectivity and your insistance on accurate facts. You do have a journalist's mind--or at least the kind of mind journalists SHOULD have.

Rick, I know what you went through. My mother who is 75 was in the hospital about a month ago with the same thing. Fortunately, she doesn't smoke, but every time she gets a virus, she breaks out completely with hives and they last for several days. I'm not a nurse, but I learned quickly on how to become one. Welcome back!

Hope your Grandmother (aka Granny to me!) recovers nicely. Tell her its never too late to stop smoking. You might want to consider a HEPA air filter for her place to reduce pathogens/antigens in the air. Anyway, give her my regards and best wishes.

Wonderful news Rick! We are going through the same problem with my neighbor who is 75. After her second lung infection in 4 months (I took her to the clinic the first time and doc said she wouldn't have made it another day without all the treatment she received) I spoke with her yesterday and said I hoped she wasn't smoking again but also said it depended upon what was important to her not to the rest of us. She dearly loves her grandbabies so hopefully that is enough to keep her strong fighting against the urge to smoke. Just a thought is to wash down the walls and whatever else (curtains, pillows etc...) to get the smell out. It is amazing how smells trigger us to respond!?! It might lessen her desire if the odor of cigerettes is gone or at least reduced. We will continue to pray for you. Diana

Rick, glad to hear your grandmother is doing better - and with continued plans to improve her health! Best Wishes!

This is my second attempt to answer this. If my first isn't permanently lost, that's why the repeat.

Thanks for the update, Rick. Glad to hear Grandma Edie is doing better. I'll still keep you in my prayers.

Has there been any further update on Ed and Mom Ruth?
