Garry,

You have a nice composition and interesting textures, but the very dull lighting and low contrast film make for an overall dull image. It would have been great to have soft side light from the left or upper left to give more shape to the bark and contrast to the image. In such flat light a very contrasty film helps - in these conditions perhaps Velvia would be the right choice or one of the Ektachromes.

I don't think you have the liberty of film choice with your digital camera. Pumping up contrast can be a post-processing task. Composition and subject is very interesting. It looks like it was an overcast day when you shot this. Try reshooting this same photo on a sunny day at a time that allows for the lighting that Frank suggests. It would be interesting to compare the two.
