Survival Workshop/Intro in So. Calif.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Enclosure received along with November 98 City of Poway (CA) water utility bill.

The free talk is given by Susan Conniry who has articles on Westergaard, and Tom Beasley who has trained with Tom Brown on tracking, etc. They have been running a wilderness school (Conniry Outdoors) for several years. They were also mentioned in the October Nightline Report , which described how they offered to do the presentations for several San Diego area communities, but only Poway (pop. 50,000) accepted their offer. However people come from LA and farther and it is an interesting presentation, so I am reposting it here for the non-Powegians.

Answers

Jon,

If you attend, ask them if they ever make presentations in Northern California.

Thanks, Diane

Diane, availability is no doubt related to how much funding is available for compensation, but they are not jet-setters, they are earth people and teach 'earth living' (their term for it). What is interesting about this is that this bright blue enclosure was sent to (presumably) all Poway residents *with the water bill* which is about the only periodic communication from the municipal administration.

Previous presentations have been in the Fire Department building and have included such things as how to start a fire with a battery and steel wool (just touch the 9-volt battery contacts to some steel wool and you will have flames). They think lighters are good to stock up on, preferable to matches. They also teach the bow-drill method of starting fire from two pieces of wood. A knife is considered the single most useful tool, and recommend the Buck Vangard. Another suggestion is to get a post-hole digger shovel and bury food and supplies sealed up in #3 plastic bottles (1/2 gal. juice size). The holes are laid out in a grid or a spiral. This way if someone cleans out your main supply you have backup.
