why do other people's farts smell?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ask William : One Thread

when i fart, i don't think it smells so bad; when somebody else farts, why does it smells like canned death to me (but, true to the aformentioned affect, they don't think it smells too bad)?

Please see the earlier answer as to why the farts aren't smelling, but you are.

As for why someone else's farts seem to have a more powerful aroma as opposed to your own... well, it's probably an issue of accustomization. Fish vendors don't smell the fish so much after hawking fish all their lives. You've been smelling your own farts your whole life; you've only occasionally smelled the farts of others.

You've just grown accustomed to the aroma of your own gas.

Your farts DO smell to you, it's just that you don't really care about it. When someone else farts, you think it smells horrible
