Red-tailed Hawk (Yellowstone NP)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

This image was taken from the same tripod holes as last weeks buffalo shot. As I was taking the buffalo picture I could hear a hawk screaming behind me. I switched to my N70-Sigma 400 and focused just as the hawk went soaring from a burnt tree top. If you go to Yellowstone, take lots and lots of film as photo opportunities abound.

This shot screams for a fill flash. Just another example of one of the big problems of spontaneity in wildlife photography. If I took it, I'd still keep it though. It is a wonderful silhoutte.

Expose for the underside and you burn out the tail color and sky. Certainly fill flash would be nice but of course do you have the "throw".

I'll take the picture as is! What makes it a strong graphic image is the contrast of the body, backlit wings and tail. The dark body goes with the burnt tree. Frontlighting the bird will simply reduce the graphic impact of the image and IMO will weaken it.
